Removing a MAS 90 Extended Solution during an upgrade - Best Practice I have two clients that want to upgrade MAS 90 to version 4.40 - 1) From version 4.20 with two Extended Solutions - Alternate Unit of Measure in Inventory and Purchase Order. 2) From version 4.30 with Master developer enhancements to the Inventory, PO, AP, SO and AR modules. What is the best way to perform the upgrade? A) Try to uninstall and remove the ExtSol / MD programs in the current version before migration to version 4.40 B) Turn OFF the ExtSol / MD setup in the current version before migration to version 4.40 C) Don't worry about ExtSol / MD programs in current version just install standard MAS 90 version 4.40 and only the data files relating to standard MAS 90 will migrate to version 4.40

Based on an issue I had with a client who had Hightower Enhancements on 4.30 and moved to 4.40 - option A - get rid of the mods before you try to migrate.

@Beth Bowers - Did Hightower provide you with instructions on how to safely remove their enhancement with a list of data files to delete, or did you have to figure that on your own?

It really depends how invasive the modifications are. I would attempt to do option C for both and see what happens ( use a copy of the original system). If you can contact the MD regarding the Modifications to see if they have any recommendations that might be would be a good thing. Also you may need to delete some records in the sy0ctl.soa file and others in order for you to migrate. I have seen that MAS will attempt to confirm the 2 environments have the same modules installed. Doing option A step one might alleviate that issue. I don't think option B will do anything. It is all what the modifications have done to the data.

@Michael McDonald - perhaps if I would have been willing to turn over my credit card, but I wasn't. So I just ran the uninstall. The 4.40 seems to copy over EVERYTHING (.old files, etc), so it's probably going to copy over files you don't want from the mod if you don't get rid of it.

@Jim Woodhead - Thank you for your response. Do you think I would receive correct advice from SAGE Support on removing their version 4.20 ExtSols - Alternate Unit of Measure - IM-1038 and PO-1033, or would I find instructions in the SAGE Knowledgebase? I have time to experiment as you have suggested.

@Beth Bowers - I will uninstall and delete what I can BEFORE the migration. THANKS!

Uninstalls usually only uninstalls the programs and system records. It doesn't fix data files.

Most of the Extended Solutions are pretty benign. They commonly used piggyback files so I bet you will be ok.

My issue was with system files, so the uninstall was what was needed for me.

I do what @JimWoodhead mentioned - I don't spend time uninstalling though I don't have the same level of experience as Beth has with existing ES that maybe are not incorporated.

Well, because of the little black cloud above my head, my one and only experience in upgrading with a no-longer-used mod wasn't good. :-(

Have you ever followed someone who installs all MAS 90 modules, even though the client is licensed to use ONLY the basic GL, AR, AP and maybe Payroll? In the past I have always unintalled modules and deleted data files and folders related to unlicensed modules. That seems to make upgrading to the new version less troublesome. I will follow Beth's advice because it matches my past experience.

I've followed a few and they can be problems for sure. I also find that sometimes in those situations where I ask questions about why those modules are there the customer (usually the bookkeeper) has no idea.Even when I'm 99% sure it's ok to delete I'm usually a little hesitant.
