Remote Printing

  • 1.  Remote Printing

    Posted 09-14-2020 10:46
2019 Advanced - Remote user using remote desktop has anew Windows 10 computer.   She prints delivery tickets from SO Invoice Printing to an OKI dot matrix printer in her remote office.  IT set up the new printer using a generic/text driver.  The printer is "redirected" (from somewhere).

When they print an invoice / delivery ticket, sometimes the second detail line will have the description print to far left, on a different column alignment than the line one detail description.  Driver issue? Printer redirection issue?  It takes between 30 seconds and a minute to start printing after clicking "print".

I am unable to make any changes to the printer configuration because IT has everything locked down.  I am looking for recommendations for where to start looking / making changes.

    Wow, dot matrix?

If the printing is 'shifting' I would suspect the driver.  You could send a Word  document and see if it shifts when printing.

Also, I see more and more IT Departments using TSPrint to handle remote printing.  https://www.terminalworks.com/remote-desktop-printing

@Moira Goggin  I know I know.  I wish the dot matrix would disappear.  It's the multiple signature copies the end users like.  I never understood why you need a copy of your own signature. I'm going to look at TSPrint.

Remember you can print multiple copies each with their own watermark, or no watermark, using multi-part.  It may be a good solution.

yes, I know you can print multiple copies with a watermark.  That's not the issue with most end users that are stuck on a dot matrix printer.  The issue is that they have customers sign the delivery ticket and the signature is carbon copied through three copies.  One copy for the customer, one copy for the files and another copy for who knows what.  My primary "argument" when trying to convince them to get rid of the dot matrix printer is "why does the customer need a copy of their own signature?".

@Doug Higgs – TSPrint has solved all of our remote printing issues, but I don't think anyone we are hosting are using Dot Matrix printers.  Let us know if that works or not!

Thank you @Sue Bennett and @Moira Goggin  This issue has been resolved.  It was an incompatible print driver.  The IT people indicated when they used the OKI 321 driver that gibberish printed.  I asked them to print the printer configuration listing and email it to me.    Well.... the printer is configured to emulate an IBM ProPrinter.  They changed the emulation back to OKI 321 and it prints perfectly.

FWIW - I have used NCR paper in a laser printer to give the customer the ability to capture signatures onto multiple copies.

Its the same paper that is used in the dot matrix forms but in cut sheets for use in printing presses, but can be used in copiers or laser printers as well.
I used to be a pressman in a former life, comes in handy sometimes. LOL

Love those tank tough OKI's but only old timers remember that they came with several emulation choices - OKI, Epson and IBM.  The younger IT bucks and does don't realize that.  Brings back many memories....................

BTW, if anyone needs an OKI, I have one in my He Shed available for the asking.
