Recently upgraded a client from 2018 PU3 to PU10e, Users are reporting slow printing

  • 1.  Recently upgraded a client from 2018 PU3 to PU10e, Users are reporting slow printing

    From the End User:

"It took Kelley from 10:00 - 3:00 (5 hrs) to print 191 invoices through Paperless Office using the Print/PDF electronically deliver. That volume is consistent with prior months volumes which she says typically take 1 hr.
I printed 3 very small PO's to Paperless Office PDF option, and it took 4 minutes. That's pretty excessive right? In the past it hasn't taken that long when I've tested."

The environment is all Sage users are running Sage 100 Std from an RDS server. Both the Sage App Server and RDS server are in a Data Center in another building on their WAN.

If my math is correct, generating the PDF's went from 20 seconds per invoice to 1.5 minutes per invoice.

Any ideas on how to speed up PDF generation?

Was Sage the only upgrade, or did you also upgrade MS Server to 2016?

We recently moved a Sage v2016 to a new RDS environment on MS 2016. With only the server changing, pdf printing became painfully slow.

We later discovered that the pdf printer used in later Sage versions improves things a lot. It sounds like you are not in this case, but maybe this will help.

(We resolved the initial problem with a custom printing interface.)

@Jerry Norman PU10 was the only Sage update. IT did install .NET 4.8 in preparation for the install.

How does one install a later version of the Sage PDf driver?

We jumped from Sage v2016 to 2020. I don't know where, among those 4 later versions, the pdf driver changes. @Chuck Peddy might know if it was 2019 or 2020.

As I recall, the increased latency occurred between producing the initial image and the final pdf output.

I had someone where they moved servers in 2018 and also updated them to 2018.10 so they could manage 1099-NEC. They had a similar issue with slower form printing. One thing I did was try to swap out a graphic on several forms. This may have helped since I haven't heard back.

@Wayne Schulz did you remove the image or replace it with a smaller (bytes) one?

Yes. First I took the image off completely and asked them to test it.
Then I think we put a smaller image on.

They never returned to me to followup so I can only guess that it must have worked... worth a shot since it's simple to try

Still chasing this issue. I did testing of different form codes, logos, no logos, different companies, clearing the 24,000 pdfs from the paperless folder, disabling AV and I still get the same slow results. Takes close to 1 minute to print/PDF a single PO from the Terminal Server, it takes 8 seconds directly from the Sage Server.

Is there a way to install a newer version of the Sage PDF printer without doing an upgrade?
Anyone else have any ideas? I'm plum out.

Maybe try installing the free trial version of TSprint and see if it helps.

Same issue with one of our 2019.4 clients.  Printing works on server.  dog slow from workstations or TS.  causing much angst.

Try setting up a new Sage user for the user in question. Build a new user (I just added a middle initial), and copy the existing users roles etc. Use the new login and see if you see better results.

Thanks @Doug Higgs, @alan niergarth & @Jim Fuller I'll try all these suggestions.

@alan niergarth what server versions does your 2019.4 client have?

Just theory here. I don't know if Amyuni driver with Paperless still creates a .CAT (catalog) file before renaming to PDF, but you could ask IT to include .CAT in AntiVirus file exclusion list.

@Alnoor Cassim your suggestion got me thinking, We disabled the AV on the terminal server for testing but not on the file server - where the pdf's are being created - DOH. Maybe that is the key, this new version of the Amyuni driver is doing something different, like creating .CAT files on the server that the AV does not like. I'll have to follow up on that.

@Jim Fuller did you see the link earlier in this post regarding the issues with Server 2019? (Link to issue.) I am sure this covers your scenario.
