Received a call this morning from a client selling on Amazon. They were just notified Amazon will start collecting tax in all states for them. I am going to leave this comment open ended other than to comment that I suspect this client will have to open an account in the remaining 43 states (in which they currently don't file).

Avalara has a Q&A forum on 6/28 at 1 PM ET regarding ""New Rules for Remote Sellers Explained"". I believe yesterdays Wayfair ruling is going to be a tectonic shift in reporting responsibilities. I only hope that either the states get together to make the process easier. Otherwise, something may happen at the Federal Level. (Assuming they can somehow overcome polarization and work together on something long enough.) https://simplify.avalara.com/sdvwayfair-qaforum/?CampaignID=7010b000001XwxU&lsmr=Outbound%20Email&utm_campaign=AVA201805-AvaTax-Webinar-TLS%20%C3%A2%C2%80%C2%93%20Q&A%20Forum%3A%20Tax%20Experts%20Explain%20Supreme%20Court%20Decision%20on%20Nexus%20-%201C&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Eloqua

It will be interesting to see how this will work. If a company has a shopping cart they may elect not to ship to certain states until the activity can justify the compliance costs.

The more the client and I have gone back and forth, it is Amazon collecting for certain states and it looks like they may remit the tax for them.

I have a customer who got a notice about Washington state and Amazon and it appears Amazon is going to remit and file for them.

Avalara has covered much of it in this article. https://www.avalara.com/trustfile/en/blog/Marketplace_sales_tax_laws_explained.html

The Party is Over for no Sales Tax unless you live in a state that doesn't collect Sales Tax like Oregon.

All the companies with shopping carts suddenly have nexus in 50 states. Better stock up on accountants.
