Reasons for having to reinstall PDF Converter every week?

  • 1.  Reasons for having to reinstall PDF Converter every week?

    Posted 09-28-2020 13:38
I have a few larger clients on hosted environments with multiple load-balanced client servers whose Sage PDF Converter functions fail at least once per week. It's a struggle to resolve at times because the users do not have install rights so they have to wait for me to show up and uninstall/reinstall from PL_AdvancedOptions_UI, and sometimes they have to get all users off of each server and reboot. They are asking me if I can help determine what the causes are normally for these issues so that they can have their host try to work proactively to prevent or resolve at night before users are affected the next business day. I know that we see Windows updates break this often, but does anyone know of anything in particular to keep an eye on, or any general tips (i.e. registry edits, etc.) that could help resolve more permanently? Thanks in advance!

I empathize, @Amber Prayfrock, and am curious about that myself.

One might think that after putting up with the BS for MANY years now, Sage would have a fix to end our frustrations......  This has to be top issue of the PITA stuff that we/user has to deal WEEKLY! Is there a Sage City post that addresses this?  I would even look up my SC PW to add my two cents to this unworldly issue.

Short of telling people not to auto install their Windows Updates, I am unaware of any short term solutions.

Sage tech support says they wrestle with MicroSoft over the issue.
Sage City recommended KB 103205 which helped one 1 case.

Yes... we asked about this at MOTM and apparently M$ owns the Amyuni print driver so they have full control over how it works.  I'm betting there could be some sort of Sage programmed prompt to avoid use of PL_AdvancedOptions_UI, but Sage would have to be motivated to make it.
Most commonly the issues we see related to the registry key having permissions reset.  If IT can somehow script (policy, logon scripts, powershell... anything) to ensure this registry key exists with users having full control, that might help.

And don't install the Windows Update version of the Amyuni driver (per the KB article linked by Lee).

I have a customer who tightly controls their desktops using virtual desktop ( VDI ) software. I’m not sure what they do behind the scenes but in general unless IT allows the install locally once I reboot the desktop reverts to what it was before anything I may have installed.

It’s a pretty cool concept but you need the technical person to cooperate and help with specifying which aspects of the desktop “persist”.

They are able to maintain this down to the ODBC driver. I can install SOTAMAS90 on the desktop but if I reboot it will be gone and my desktop is fresh as if I never installed anything.

I’m not saying this is the cause but sharing experience of where I’ve seen this type behavior before.

No matter what the reason, this is SAGE's problem to fix.  It is their software using the driver.  When air bags detonate unexpectedly or batteries catch fire, it is not the contract manufacturer that the public expects to remedy the problem, it is GM's or Toyota or Tesla's.  If you can't get a driver that can withstand updates, then get a different driver.

I've gotten some people so worked up :D

Thank you to all who responded. I am going to start by reviewing the registry key permissions and see where to go from there.

Having this problem, why doesn't Sage change to another driver?
