When something seems frozen, I'll use Task Manager / Resource Monitor to make sure it's still actually doing something (CPU activity, Memory activity, Disk activity, network activity...). If there's activity, wait. If no activity, waiting might not help.

Sad to say your going to have to let it run. You might want to see if you are dealing with Span files meaning you would have GL_DetailPosting.M4T GL_DetailPosting.M4T.001, GL_DetailPosting.M4T.002 and so on in GLXXX directory for the company code your working with. If you have growing span files like these then it will take long. You can also run the Task Manager to see what tasks are running from the station where this purge is running from. I had to do this recently and it took 2 days to get through massive Span files. Big pain in the .....
