Problems upgrading to 2021 Premium PU1

I'm trying to upgrade a client from 2016 Premium to 2021 PU1 Premium
While going through the migration process I encountered an ALTER DATABASE failed because a lock could not be placed on database 'MAS_System'. Try again later. Setup will now terminate.

I checked all my permissions, windows and SQL, so there shouldn't be a problem on that level, I hope. I verified that I had access to the \\servername\C$\SQL\Data location that the migration process uses.

I got around this error by manually creating backups of the MAS_System database in both the source version and 2021 version SQL\Data folders.

This allowed me to successfully migrate the data, but the MAS_System settings didn't come over. No users, security roles, UDFs or VI jobs came over.

First time I've ever seen that.

Has anyone else come across this scenario

    Have you tried this?

Error: ALTER DATABASE failed because a lock could not be placed on database 'MAS_SYSTEM'

Check for open connections to the destination SQL database.  Restarting the SQL service just prior to running the migration should suffice.

Yes I did try Wayne's suggestion and also restarted SQL on both instances prior to migration.

I uninstalled Sage 2021 completely. Rebooted the server. Installed Sage 2021 once more, but did not apply PU1.

Went through the migration from 2016 SQL to 2021 SQL and everything migrated as expected, users, roles, UDFs, everything.

Moral of the story, avoid PU1.

Thanks for your suggestions @Wayne Schulz and @Kevin Moyes

Do we have any time estimate for when v2021 PU2 may be released?
I have to start some custom programming being built for a mid-October upgrade (Premium to Premium), and I'm wondering if I can try to avoid this issue by aiming for PU2 instead of PU1.

Sage updated the release schedule in kb and I believe September 15 is the due date

    Perfect.  Thanks Wayne.  KB 56080.
(I didn't know Sage had this scheduled posted... bookmarked now!).

Our team found the same issues.  Upgrading bombs with update 1 but not with 2021 without upgrade 1.  Two conversions had to be restarted.  Update 1 applied after completion of the upgrade.  Anyone run into other issues with Update 1 if applied in this manner?  Not much listed in the KB about it.

I have the exact same issue with Sage 2021 Premium PU2.  Tried following the KB 111959 Option I (PU2 installed with all hotfixes) & II and while the manual backup of the MAS_System avoided the error, it didn't bring over any users like John Kerr described with PU1.  Called Sage and they recommended I restore back to Sage 100 2021 base (or reinstall Sage 2021 NO PU) and do data migration and then install the PU 2.

This also happened to my co-worker - again only thing that worked was to go back to the base Sage 100 2021.  Option I and II in article didn't work.

On my next Premium upgrade, I did not install any PU and migration went fine.  However, I'm concerned because I have to install the PU and this is a pilot and I will plan to NOT re-migrate system files.  I could not get Sage to say if they were planning on fixing this issue or not. I also suggested they take Option I off as it does not work.

Has anyone else had issues with Sage Premium 2021 and PU2?
