Printing Lockups on v2024.1 Crystal 2020

  • 1.  Printing Lockups on v2024.1 Crystal 2020

We have a client getting lockups during printing on a daily basis. It happens multiple times a day while printing or previewing from Sage. Both the Sales Order printing & Pick Ticket printing, & Purchase Order printing. It will work fine again & again, until it doesn't. It locks the task, which needs a full kill of the session on the remote server.

Windows 11. Sage v2024.1 Advanced. Crystal 2020. All network printers. No redirected printers or invalid printers loaded.

We had them on 32-bit, it was happening then.

We moved them to 64-bit & applied the recent ODBC fix from Sage to both the server & remote server, still happening.

We've tried launching Sage as admin, launching in 90mode, Windows8 compatibility. Tried a Windows10 machine, still happening. DEP is set correctly. Drivers are updated. Default printers on the machines are real printers, nothing virtual. The forms are set to "No Printer" in Crystal. We've reinstalled the Sage workstation, Crystal reports. Installed all prerequisites, including .NET 3.5 at Sage's direction. Made sure all registry permissions are set to full access for all users for Crystal. IT recreated the user's profile. Increased heap size a couple increments. Nothing is helping.

All users are utilizing the remote server, so no individual workstations. It happens for all users. Can't reproduce on-demand. No errors. Nothing in the logs that match up to the times of lockups.

    Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Anything in the Windows Event Viewer (on user TS or Sage server)?

    Try MAS90 mode to test?

You mention the recent ODBC patch, are you running the CS ODBC service?  They released a new pvxiosvr.exe very recently.  I installed it on a v2022 ADV.  Working again.  However, not sure if this would be the answer based your description.

@Jeff Schwenk I am not running the CS ODBC service; that thing has performed terrible at other clients where it just stops working but still shows running & then nobody can print.

@Kevin Moyes nothing in the event viewer logs on either server. I tried running in 90mode & it didn't help.

    Anti-virus
I can't tell from your description whether you tried add/remove those Crystal 32 and 64 runtimes and then re-run wksetup which I think puts them back in

@Wayne Schulz IT is checking on the AV solution. I did remove the runtimes, but they do get replaced when you reinstall the Sage workstation.

Not sure what your definition is of "remote server" is however, if is a server users connect to via a VPN over an internet connection and printing to a local printer there could be bandwidth issues.  If this is the architecture you may consider using TSPrint

@Dana Young - I hear you on the CSODBC stopping.  My cure for that was to use Windows Scheduler to stop/start the service at least daily.  I haven't had an issue since then.

@Jeff Schwenk that's a great solution to that buggy service. If we need to try it, we will implement this process along with it!

@Doug Higgs They are logging into a RDP server. No printers are local; all printers are on the network. They literally have 2 printers: 1 in the warehouse & 1 in the office. We do use Printix & then tried TSPrint but that was worse & they got fails every time they went to print. We are back to Printix again. Yesterday, there were 2 lockups out of maybe 80+ print jobs. They do have a site-to-site VPN so IT is going to try direct network printing without Printix, or the like.

Maybe try a local printer and see if the same behavior occurs.  If it works that may indicate something with the network print sharing, or driver issue on the network print server.

I'm dealing with a somewhat similar situation though I don't know if there issue always manifests during printing. They initially were having a lot of lock ups and I thought some AV exclusions fixed it. They mentioned now that they're still having random lockups ( unsure if this is while printing / printing the same reports as you list).

This customer is not on any remote desktops and is using regular network connections for each workstation.

    Sage 100 2024.1 Advanced

I summarized the info here to see if any of it rings a bell with their internal IT people.
This may not be related but thought I'd mention it.

I'll report back as I learn more
