Solution: 

Library Master - Company Maintenance - Preferences - ensure that "Print User Logon in Reports" is checked. If this is not checked then the variable for the user logon is not available/populated.

I also note that this is not in the Sage KB ( it sure seems like it should be), which is probably why  Sage support wasn't much help.
