I recently did a Presentation Skills Training Session for 90 Minds and last night most of us watched a presentation that I'm going to use for a follow up example. This post is NOT political! I'm only using the Democratic rebuttal to President Trump's oval office speech as a training example because it's timely and most everybody watched.

For those who viewed my training session, I mentioned my #1 pet peeve and that's using a '?' mark as a slide to announce Q&A time. This slide tends to stay visible to your audience longer than any other slide. Why not put up a list of benefits or a visual that means something and announce that it's time for questions. If you believe that a picture is worth a 1000 words then it only makes sense besides I have a feeling that most audiences are smart enough to know that when you ask for questions it's time to ask them.

During the training session, the first skill that viewers wanted to talk about was "how to introduce team members to your audience." The short answer is to have the person introduce themselves at the beginning of the presentation and then the facilitator should embellish or compliment their expertise in a way that the audience understands that you've brought an expert worthy of their attention. When it's time for the team member to take over the presentation, you make a transition statement and reintroduce the team member again complimenting their expertise. The team member will then stand up and move to the front of the presentation while the facilitator takes a seat.

Last night's Democratic rebuttal was a primary example of my 2nd biggest pet peeve and a prime example of what NOT to do! The way they should have done it with both of them on camera for the start was Senator Schumer should have made the opening remark (15-30 seconds) and then introduced Speaker Pelosi. Then Schumer should have moved off camera. When it was time for Schumer, the Speaker should introduce him and then move off camera. At the end, Pelosi should have reentered the shot and had the final sentence or two. It would have been much more effective, much smoother and more powerful.

Instead we got this for the entire time. Regardless of your politics, what were you thinking as one person spoke and the other scowled? Audiences think the same thing when 2 speakers are on stage or in front and one of them has nothing to do but look silly.
