Prediction: Dominos will begin to fall during 2012. If I were Sage I'd be very concerned about the state of the channel. We may begin to see the first signs of this with Sage Summit in 2012 which falls VERY late in the year and light attendance from VARS would send Sage a big message.

My first thought was you were talking about the pizza chain. Sage's de-emphasis on the channel has been evident by the departure in the past year and a half year of many strong channel advocates within Sage, particular those in senior management positions. Sage in Europe has stronger relationships with its end users and that approach is being implemented here in NA. The recent elimination of Bronze level maintenance is also an indication of Sage's effort to draw customers unto itself and reduce the value a VAR provides. We can expect further actions by Sage to undermine us as it works to improve its financial performance. The recent change in maintenance margin further indicates that it's all about how the current pie is divided up. There is very little action to increase the size of the pie. This direction has come from a very high level at Sage and negative reaction from the channel isn't going to change it. It will only change if the financial results Sage seeks are not achieved. In the past the perception was that as the Sage succeed, so did the channel and vice a versa. That is no longer something we can depend on and for some time the opposite is largely true. If we truly believe that Sage needs a strong channel, we need to rely less and less on its products and turn to alternatives as a way for channel partners can remain financial strong. Perhaps in time if financial results are not met Sage will return to its channel roots, but until that time comes we need to be more independent of Sage.

I told Tom Miller in a one-on-one last month that, in my opinion, this year will see the near complete disintegration of the Sage channel unless they course correct soon. It may be too late. Since I had that meeting, we've seen Blytheco pick up Sugar, Arxis picking up Intacct. We'll see more very soon.

If you sat in on the branding webinar this morning, I didn't think Tom had his usual perkiness, He seemed like someone trying hard to keep up a good front...

Well ... if I was him and being asked to shovel shit down people's throats and act like it was candy, I would be considering what my life's work is all about.

You know Peter, we've asked partners what they thought of these changes and everyone has said they love them and think the changes are absolutely fantastic. I'm rather surprised that you would not feel the same way. Love, Tom

Peter, You should throw him a bone and offer him a VP of Channel Management position with Azamba. You are actually trying to grow the company! Offer him an opportunity to work from the home office (save on drive time and wardrobe) and the ability to give presentations in front of friendly faces. Given the fact that he would be reporting to someone who isn't a butt hole, you could lowball the salary but still double his overall pay by giving him a cut of new sales........ I bet he wouldn't think twice before bidding Pascal Adieu!

The clients do not belong to Sage. They are our clients, and we have the ""trusted advisor"" relationship in almost all cases. For those that are also CPA clients, even more so. My CPA partners would be incensed to find out that Sage considers them their clients, and probably would pull the plug on our relationship with Sage in a heartbeat (or at least as soon as tax season is over). I also believe that for most partners we have the power to find alternative software and move many clients to it quickly. There are many competitors that will provide pricing to accomplish that.

Speaking of which, I got a call the other day from someone at Open Systems looking to recruit VARs, and I noticed on the 90minds homepage that Open Systems is listed there. Would whoever in the group handles that care to share some info, please? Either publicly or privately is fine.

Perhaps I didn't get the joke, but as far as I can see Open Systems is still in business.

@JohnHoyt - I wasn't trying to make a joke (despite the LOL). I sincerely thought that Open Systems was out of business years ago. I just don't hear about them much any more. So ... going back to Phil's original question - does anyone here work with them?
