Sage 2019 Advanced PU 3 - customer freezes 20,000 records for quarterly physical count.  When entering physical count entry, accessing Lines tab, it takes 5 to 6 minutes to populate the panel.  After populated, when they search for items, it can take upwards of 2-2:30 to search for an item.

They upgraded from version 5.4x earlier this year and this process was much faster.

I installed their data on a stand-alone system, with no AV or any other restrictions with the same slow performance.  Does this performance with 20,000 items sound unreasonable or is their something else to look at?

Server and stand alone - same performance
AV - since on stand alone without AV - same performance
Running Sage in "Classic" mode rather than "Standard" - same performance

We have discussed the option of importing physical counts, but customer wants to keep some processes.

You may want to test migrate the data to Premium and see if you observe the same behavior.

Was hoping not to have to do this, but it might be my next test.

I have always suggested they pre-filter, a smaller range of items when going into PC Entry screen, so they have no more than a few thousand records on the screen.  And if they are searching to key in the counts and not from a printed Physical Count Worksheet, it may be easier for them to use Count Card Entry.  They key in the item code and the Quantity.  No searching required.

They are quite set in their "ways" when it comes to inventory counting.  I've suggested count cards, importing, scanning...They are "set in their ways" and just want the system to "act like it used to".

Chasing an inefficient goal is... something I've been forced to do, and nobody likes that mindset.  It sounds you've tried convincing them this difficulty can be seen an opportunity to improve their approach.  The choice I'd give them:
    • Try to find what is the problem, with no guarantees (billable time).  The benefit they are seeking is "the same old same old"... AKA: spending $ for no real net gains.
    • Review the process, choosing something better.  Benefit: potentially more efficient / accurate counts.

Before clicking in lines.  Enter a smaller range of products in the grid below and then go to the lines section.

    Reinitialize the IM_Physical before freezing.

Do they have a lot of bloat in the tier table?  Can they purge zero quantity cost tiers before the freeze to limit the number of rows in IM_Physical?

All items are either Standard or Average cost.

At 20K records, I don't think that's unreasonable.  The new Physical Count screen loads the grid and it does take forever and I've certainly heard about it from plenty of people.  The bottom line is that in the new version, it is NEVER going to "work like it used to" without making some changes on their end in how the use the screen.  That's one of those screens where there doesn't appear to be any gain for the customer from the new system, and it sucks.  Showing them all of the other cool stuff they got with the upgrade won't take away the bad taste from this one screen.  Now if they got something out of pre-loading the current QOH, or excluding inactives, or being able to run the physical count with only variances (which may not even be available on 2019.3 yet), then you'd have some leverage.
