Are they using mapped drives or only network shares? The reason I ask is I've seen this on some systems, where the network share silently disconnects, so when you start to use the network share, it has to go through all of the security stuff as though you were not connected. With mapped drives, the mapping keeps the security in memory and the reconnect is almost instantaneous.
IT types hate mapped drives, because yes, it does reduce security. The speed difference though, especially for STD but even ADV is significant. Also, in 2016 R2 and above, Microsoft started enforcing the silent disconnect at 600 seconds by default. That means after 5 minutes of inactivity, the server will drop the connection, and then have to connect again when activity continues. This sometimes leads to corrupted records such as in sy_workstation or sy_console for instance. So in either mapped or network shares, the IT department may want to crank up the timeout to about 5120 from 600, which will set the silent disconnect to about 1.4 hours.
