Client is a restaurant.  Servers have pre-tax health insurance.

Client wants to allow the servers to pay their portion of health insurance on weeks they don't make enough to cover the insurance or they are off work, or whatever.

On the weeks they don't make enough, I'm thinking about a negative deduction for the money they're giving the company?  Haven't tested out, but feel like that may work (although Sage is much pickier about taxes in 2.0).  But when someone just comes in and hands over their health insurance premium and that's it - how on earth to handle this so their wages and taxes are correct?

I'm no payroll guru, but could you setup an earnings code that is non-taxable? Maybe show that in Box 14 or don't show it at all on the W-2.

If the employee gives you $40 then show them earning $40 in that non-taxable earnings and take the deduction as you always would.

I'd thought about that, too, but the thing that makes this such a PIA is that their insurance is Pre-Tax, so their taxable wages should be reduced by the amount they are paying.  Their non-existent taxable wages...
