Payroll multi-state question. Our client has employees working in several different states and wants to pay withholding to their home state, but calculate work comp for the state that they are working in. I think that the payroll data entry line detail state is controlling both of these. Is there any way to specify a different work comp state?

I've not done a lot of work with this however I can see in PR data entry there is a WC Code that can be changed for each line. Seems like it would do what you want. There is a separate State field for the line which I believe controls the tax withholding.

You are correct that there is a WC code per line, but the work comp codes are set up by state in WC maintenance (before the code is entered you specify the state). In data entry, when the state is changed to reflect the proper withholding state, this state also is used to pull the WC code rate. If WC code 1234 exists for several states, all with different rates, entering 1234 in PR data entry pulls the rate for that line's state (the withholding state). We need it to be for a different state for WC purposes.

I'm not sure if this helps but here is what the Help file says: To calculate workers' compensation for the SUI state instead of the primary state, you must set up a workers' compensation code under the primary state, but enter the description, calculation method, rate, etc., of the SUI state.

Unfortunately WC will be for several different states, not just the SUI state. And I think it might be possible that in a given pay period they might have multiple WC states. Thanks though!
