Took a call from CPA using Sage PR via the Accountant's Network.  Topic was on planning to move from v2017 PR to v2019.  He processes PR for about 50 different companies.  Based on the number, he is usually running PR for some company every day.

So the question I have is how to phase the transition over to v2019.  Obviously, this will not be an overnight or over the weekend project.  Am wondering how to bring a few companies at a time over.  I have been under the assumption that you have to migrate all companies at the same time and that there are some system wide PR tables that are created.

How does one accomplish this task?

    Thanks in advance,

When you figure it out, let us know. We have a CPA firm that does payroll for many companies and I think the plan was to migrate a few companies at a time. Is that not possible??

We are at the tail end of migrating a client that has 30 or so companies with about 20 company codes using payroll and Job Cost. We did a test migration and converted all of the PR company codes and had the users involved in setting up and testing payroll taxes. When testing was finished, we migrated a few companies at a time, spread over several weeks. This client had a new server for Sage 2018 and that helped allow us to have some companies running 2017 and others running 2018.

Overall the payroll migration has gone well, custom reports were a pain for Both Payroll and Job Cost. Payroll reporting issues were due to Personally Identifiable Information in PR custom reports. We had a ton of Job Cost reports that used the PTD, JTD, and YTD fields (which no longer exist) so that was a mountain of an issue.  But those hurdles needed to be overcome regardless of with bringing the data over a few companies at a time.

We had a project last year where I had to merge a legacy PR company code into an existing Premium system. Basically the concept was to copy the MAS_### folder in place and convert, so I think you could do a test migration with company system files, do all the conversions (as proof of concept / advance testing), then re-copy each company folder / reconvert as you want to move them over.  System files (paperless logs...) will have to be dealt with manually, no new UDF's in the transition, and try to avoid new users (user key issues).
(I'm not a Payroll Guru... this was the only time I've ever touched PR in any capacity).
