    Don't know if this has been discussed, but the merge fields in the new 2018 have changed to use <> rather than [].  All modules have converted on their own except payroll, so keep an eye out.  Those in the old setup are encased in square brackets [] whereas the actual fields  in 2018 and above are encased in birds mouth brackets <> (except payroll has not updated on its own)

    I think it's the opposite--square brackets replaced angled brackets.  Still, I see an issue in that there are "mixed brackets" in your screen.   Plus, your screen doesn't look like mine with formatting options. Here's a screenshot of the same screen for me from V2019, SP2.  However, mine is just from the demo data, not from a system that has been converted.

    The change from <> to [] doesn't happen until v2019 (needed because of adding HTML formatting in email messages, and <> characters are used in HTML code).
