We have historically used an external SMTP for a variety of reasons. Be ware that there are many new security procedures being implemented by Microsoft in Office 365 which will impact your ability to relay mail. Most SMTP providers are developing procedures to ensure that these servers can serve the purpose without looking like they are phishing.
