Over use of words

  • 1.  Over use of words

    Posted 08-29-2019 13:39
I was busted for using the word "success" by a partner-friend of mine today. He was wrong though because we should ALL be focused on success. :D

If i'm going to be busted for using any word too much, it would probably be "basically" as it is basically so bad when I do presentations or demos that it is basically a fetish. LOL

Am I the only one who catches themselves using certain words or phrases way too much?

Personal pet peeves are when people say "honestly" or "truthfully" or "to be honest" ... those should be stricken from everyone's usage.

Thanks @Peter Wolf for pointing out how unnecessary certain catch phrases are. I will try to rid them from my speech. Honestly.

For what it's worth, at the end of the day, to be perfectly frank, Peter, it is what it is.  That's how I feel and I've always felt that way and always will.  Does that make sense?  YouknowwhatImean?  Right?

LOL - those are *all* great ones!!!

A related quirk is people relating the same anecdotes over and over and over again. I completely understand how it happens - you have stories that you tell that work and get good response so you trot them out in company. The problem is if you aren't paying attention, you repeat them to the same people multiple times.

Related to that is when I do demos, I use certain metaphors and language that is effective (and I've fine-tuned over a decade) so often that I have some partners who sit on CRM sales calls with me and I can feel them cringe over the phone lines when I use them. My wife sits next to me in my home office and she has said "good lord, I could do your sales demo, I've heard it too many times!!"

    BWAHAHAAHAHA

Salespeople who say, "honestly" in any conversation should be put out of their misery. I had a sales director once who came up with "Trust me. I'm in sales." He'd say it with a smile on his face at times when he was discussing issues that were hard to get across. The effectiveness of the phrase was rooted in the the gut sense everybody has about a salesperson they don't know: if their lips are moving, they're lying. So for a salesperson to imply that they were lying earlier, but now they aren't is *insane*.

Use "frankly", "to put it bluntly", or "in all seriousness" if you're trying to say something plainly. Not "to be honest."

No 2 on my list is not a word, but a style. "Upspeak" makes my cringe. How can anybody have confidence in a person who is constantly questioning what they are telling you? "Vally-girl-speak" has no place in a situation where you are trying to be a trusted voice.

Jerry, why not skip ALL those words and simply state your piece?

Regarding "upspeak", you have just criticized all of our Canadian friends who uptick at the end of their sentences. :D

I think this should really be about how we most effectively to the "audience," whether prospect, customer, student, coworker, boss, family, etc.

The responsibility for making communication work is on the sender. If we can't say it in a way that works, we can't blame the receiver of the message. Actively thinking about this and working to improve it has been an awareness- and empathy-expanding experience for me.

Sometimes "overused" or repetitive words are the right thing. Many times they get in the way, emotionally at least - which affects the receiver's openness to consider our words.

"The danger in communication is the illusion that it's been accomplished." GB Shaw. Each of us can work harder to reduce the illusion and increase the reality.

    Great point Jerry.

Even within my own team, I feel like I repeat things to death only to find that not everyone tracks with it. I used to get frustrated and now accept it as human nature. People only pay attention when they absolutely need to (and sometimes not even then).

I’m late to this conversation and just now seeing posts all while I’ve been drafting mine, so I’m posting anyway as if I didn’t see others.

    And mis-use of words like your/you’re, it’s/its, accept/except, affect/effect, ensure/insure, cite/site/sight,
Ditto to “basically” which I basically try to avoid.
I blame Taylor McDonald presentations that hooked me on "Guess what?” so much I need methadone.
And tagging “right?” all too frequently.
Valley Speak, vocal fry, and acronym drops. Ugh!

PS.  And since "you" doesn't adequately distinguish between singular and plural, I advocate for "y'all" or "all y'all".

"I'm posting anyway as if I didn't see others." LOL Too funny!

That's how most people post on social media anyway - at least you are brave enough to admit that you are doing it. Most haven't and won't read the other messages.

I am at the point with "basically" where I try not to physically cringe when I say it because I listen for it when I speak. I'm still using the word, but it's severely reduced.

I do like saying "does that make sense" and "are we in agreement" because most of my conversations are over the phone and I have no idea if people are shaking their heads or scowling at the phone.

    Does that make sense?

About Toastmasters. I was an active member for a couple years. Very helpful for me, and I watched many others advance huge strides from their entry.
The Ahh Counter is a pretty effective way to help a person change habits in that area. I know it sounds dreadful, but it works for speakers who are past the first phase of just getting comfortable talking in front of a group.

With "Does that make sense," it's really the overuse and using it as a filler.  I've heard following statements that didn't require a pulse check.  Like, "I'm going to wait til you've had a chance to look at it...if that makes sense."  Well, yes, I stuck with you all the way through that complicated sentence.
