One of my Sage 100 Advanced users is looking to fine tune their exemption tracking for sales tax purposes. They are aware of Avalara and have reviewed their solutions (at least 2x) and determined they don't want to spend the money. Instead, they are looking to track multi-state tax exemptions via a specific tax code. A customer who is exempt in more than one state would be assigned ""MULTIEXEMPT"" as their sales tax code and that would prompt the order desk to review and ensure that the exemption is in place and if needed to charge appropriate tax. Realizing this is an error-prone procedure, has anyone used a fixed cost solution to track exemption expirations? We are thinking of adding in an expiration date for each exemption because one thing I pointed out is that exemptions may not be good indefinitely and 3 years into trying to work around the use of Avalara they may find they have a few hundred exemption certificates where they aren't sure if they are good without pulling the backup paper.
