Hi everyone - we are scheduling the next Sage Roundtable for September 29, 2021 at 9am Pacific Time/12 Noon Eastern

    More information coming soon!

In the meantime, let's get the conversation started.

This is what Elliott provided as a base point for discussion.

    • Production Management incorporation into the base product.
      • Outline the direction we are taking with folding this into the base product.
      • Present some of the pieces of P/M (Production Management)
      • Maybe discuss possible Beta partners
    • Maybe some discussion around some of the recent issues around performance?
    • Discussion around future bigger enhancements needed

Please feel free to add any subjects you would like to discuss below.   Please note that given this is the R&D group - we will not be discussing bundling or pricing.  Thanks!

    These are important topics.
I'd also like to hear more about their intentions relating to MS Power Apps integrations. Will they be spearheading any more that haven't yet been released? Is there something we can do to enhance this?

I have a mental list of questions related to SPC (Sage Partner Cloud... the Azure option).  Some kind of roadmap would be nice, to see the high level goals Sage has for the portal.  If it's likely to become abandon-ware, that is also something we need to know.
At the top of my list:
    • What is the plan for upgrades?  Will customers be forced to a new server, with the new version pre-installed, or will we be able to upgrade on the existing server (and somehow re-point the "Sage 100" launcher link to the new version)?
    • Advanced / Premium?
    • Are there plans for a proper two server site (Terminal Server / Sage Server)?  As is, to do anything like an Excel query, the SPC server becomes a full remote desktop environment for users, which is not ideal from a security perspective.

    1. TLS 1.0 and 1.1 will stop being supported by Microsoft soon ( maybe someone knows a more exact date). However, there are probably more than a few Sage 100 customers on v2018 or earlier for which there is no path to TLS 1.2 aside from a full upgrade. In many cases, a full upgrade is problematic because these customers have layered on several integrations and the upgrade time and cost are now prohibitive.  Can there be a TLS 1.2 patch for these older versions who are "stranded' at prior releases for a variety of reasons but most often related to integrations that are complex/costly to upgrade?

Certainly, customers aren't blameless for failing to upgrade.

It also seems like Sage should take more of a leadership role in vetting ISV solutions and how they integrate into Sage 100 - especially the ones that install directly into Sage 100 ( as opposed to just a synchronization tool like AP Automation ).

As I frequently hear when I bring up concerns - everyone knows about this and talks about this. How about we do something about this?

I also suggest 90 Minds aim higher in establishing discussions with Sage. There's no bigger waste of time than sitting in meetings and discussing an issue and that person has no authority whatsoever to assist. Been there. Done that. Got the T-shirt.

I don't know if this is the place but has there been any discussion about Windows 11 tentatively coming out Oct 11 and Sage 100 regarding compatibility.  We all have that customer that is going to want to update their computers to be on cutting edge of technology.

Sage added a KB entry on this yesterday.

Essentially Sage says they will ( expect to ) support 11 on their 2020 and 2021 versions.

They go on to say that 2022 should roll out March/April and expect to support Windows 11 there as well.

I believe Windows 11 is due on or about October 5, 2021.

My concern is that Sage seems to silently rewrite what “supported version” means.

I tell customers that a supported version is one that Sage will issue a PU regularly for. That seems to have silently slipped to be N-1

Being able to call and ask Sage a question on an N-3 is not as useful since they may not issue a fix for a problem on say 2019 even though it’s on the supported list thru the 2022 release.

And customers, as you likely know, are on N-3 frequently because of the boatload of add-ons( for which there are few apparent rules on ease of upgrade or even the speed at which they should be upgraded ).

These add-ons are expensive and time consuming to release which results in customers not upgrading.

Sage asks “why don’t people upgrade” but I don’t think they like the answers —- or they lack the ability to do anything.

It’s the same poor management of the product that sees Sage only update their release schedule on the day they actually release the update or version. At least they’re never late under that method.

From what I have read about Win 11, it requires a minimum hardware level to support.  Many users will eventually get there, but WIN 11 probably not will probably not gain traction for a least a year IT staffs begin to roll it out.  But this doesn't let Sage off the hook for upgrades.

It would be my wish that Elliot (Sage) come clean with how their hands are tied.  Sage's focus is NOT Sage 100.  What does this exactly mean for the product?  We all have our hopes and dreams for the products future but there are limits to what can/will be done?  Can they speak frankly with us?  Where is the ship headed at quarter sail?

I heard from a reliable source at Sage that testing for Windows 11 will happen with v2020 and v2021, but the testing will happen upon release of Windows 11 because testing pre-releases has proven to be ineffective.  To Wayne's point, I am not sure why they aren't testing v2019 since it is a supported version (N-3).

@Kevin Moyes - I believe Windows Server 2022 will be tested in the coming months with v2020, v2021 and v2022 with the release of v2022 being the catalyst.  I have nothing definitive to support this statement...only reading between the lines, if you will.

Other things the group may want to think about asking Sage about are:

    1. eBusiness Manager replacement - it would be nice if Sage would do something to provide an open API for websites like Shopify, Magento, BigCommerce, etc. to push and pull data from Sage 100 in terms of customer information, inventory information, orders, invoices, etc.  I think most people today have their own website, and they really just need it to communicate with Sage as simply as possible.  Obviously, CimCloud does way more than just communicate with the website.

    2. Point of Sale - could be something similar to the eBiz Mgr replacement, or maybe Sage needs to develop something that resides inside Sage 100?  What do most customers really need?  Cash drawers, end of day closes, layaways?

How about something cool using the MS Power Apps?  For example, have a cash receipts app.  Use you phone to take a picture of the checks and the app sums the check amount and creates a deposit in Sage 100.

@Bob Pfahnl The Mod Squad is strong and active. We meet twice a year and submit recommendations to Sage then. Our second session of this year is about to start. I had a couple of personal things come up pushing us to start later but we will be getting started in the next couple of weeks.

We are discussing how to involve the larger membership in the process so expect more on that in the next month or two.

A user should not be able to enter general ledger account numbers which in turn act as a control account in places like Department Maintenance if the account is invalid ( status = deleted/inactive). Sage does prevent entering an account and gives a warning ( you also can't use a lookup to select the account )

    However

If the account is already in use in department maintenance then Sage should prevent the user from flagging it as delete/inactive in the general ledger module and require the user to change the account number in department maintenance PRIOR to taking any action to invalidate the account number.

By not doing so the user may not know until a critical time such as when they are printing payroll checks that an account in department maintenance is invalid.

Sage doesn't seem to check for a valid account ( within Department Maintenance ) until the register is about to be printed -- and ACH generated -- there is a possibility that payroll will come to a halt until someone can chase down the error message.

This may occur in other areas of Sage as well. I just ran across it in payroll and haven't checked whether it's also a problem in other control account areas like setup or AR / AP division maintenance.

@Wayne Schulz. This has been on the Mod Squad list since early 2020. Sounds like we should recommend additional controls.

MS-GL074 Security GL Posting restrictions on control accounts. GL control accounts (Inventory, AP, AR, Cash, Puchases Clearing, WIP) should have posting restrictions that only allow direct postings from proper subsidiary modules. Role security would allow override GL adjustments to control accounts. It's too easy for these accounts to become out-of-balance with the modules.

Wow @Bill Pfahnl - What a blast from the past.  Back in the mid 80's, the System 36 with RPG programming was all rage, my IT programmer took two weeks to make this a reality.  It REALLY is a useful feature!!!  But will it sell new licenses by itself?  But taken on the whole, our competitors will sell more licenses...

Workstation setup should install all relevant components.
This likely includes testing to ensure that the person installing has local administrator rights prior to beginning
The typical Sage 100 user has changed significantly from 15 years ago - yet the workstation setup has barely evolved and presently requires a user be familiar with what aspects of Sage they will use which of those require a separate installation

    1. Workstation Setup
    2. Federal and State Tax Filing ( needed for MICR as well as e-filing )
    3. Bar code fonts
    4. Paya Connect Desktop
    5. Copy activate.pvx for Adv/Prem to local
