I just had a client report the same message.  They have Avatax.  No Starship or ScanForce.

Confirmed, and now a second client of ours is reporting it

We are starting to get support calls on this too. They all have Avalara.

Does anyone know if the users are able to continue on with the order? equally important, if they are able to continue on, Should they?

Yes I don't think that it's likely the same cause - SI UOM is probably an untrapped error type message. 

The Orders/Invoices I saw are US.

Ok, Donna had the same issue with a client.  She had a credit memo that was failing with the same error.
She noticed all the Taxable lines were coming up as non-taxable (totals were showing up on the Non-Taxable box in the Totals tab).
She fixed it by removing the Freight from the totals tab, then all sales went into the taxable box and calculated tax correctly.  She just added a "Freight" line as a workaround for now.  Hope that helps.

Although DSD clearly wants us to always go through Avalara for support, I have reported it directly to DSD. 

I have not opened a case with Avalara, I'm hoping they are getting inundated with cases. unless everyone thinks that too

It's not the connector.  I opened a Case with Avalara a couple hours ago.  Phone call next though I suspect y'all have beaten me to it.

I gave a call into Avalara about an hour ago, they weren't much help and advised me to submit a case from the Partner Portal, which I did. Per their website still no incidents reported that I can see.

We are aware of a deploy that went out earlier today that seems to be resulting in the SI UOM message and error seeing. We are working on rolling this back now and I will provide an update as soon as that has been completed.

As an FYI - I notified a good sized client who uses Avalara and they reported ( I did not watch over their shoulder to see how they tested ) that they were not getting this issue and weren't able to reproduce it even when I suggested it was somehow related to freight.

I am not saying this issue isn't happening - or urgent - just that for one of my clients it didn't seem to be happening.
