MOTM - Sage Follow Up

    Hey 90 Minds community,

I understand our Sage sessions at this year's Meeting of the Minds event left some partners feeling like they didn't get the Sage 100 content they were most interested in. I'd like to make this right by you all.

As Nancy Teixeira said in her intro video for the event, Sage 100 is a huge product for us and we're very committed to supporting this product line and to supporting you, our Sage 100 partners. Let me know what topics you wish we had covered, and I'll work to coordinate a bonus event to get you that information.

    Thanks,
    Phuong

Phuong - Thank you for this offer. We all want to make the most of Sage and Sage 100. Personally, I have these questions.

    - What is the immediate and medium-term future for Production Management (fka Work Order) and Operations Management (fka JobOps)? Scanco can't seem to keep up with Sage 100 updates for either, and we've seen few if any, feature enhancements in OM during the past several years. Compared to new mfg options out there (start with Acumatica), OM is lagging -- how does Sage intend to keep current JobOps/OM customers in the fold?

    - While we understand what SPC offers, most of us already use other cloud providers for our Sage customers who want that; we are very comfortable with them and understand their reliability. Will we be penalized for using these providers instead of SPC? What do Sage 100 customers realistically get from using SPC instead of, say, I-BN or gotomyerp? If that's not clear, why should we do that to our customers?

    - All the messaging about moving current Sage 100 customers to cloud solutions (Intacct) leaves me convinced that Sage no longer thinks Sage 100 is viable for winning new customers. Is this true? If not, please show us the materials and success stories to prove otherwise. Oh, and please tell the World, as the industry apparently agrees with my assessment.

    - Why didn't you make a presentation to clearly show the pros and cons of Sage 100 vs Intacct for customers in differing situations? We need this sort of thing if we are to recommend anything to our customers. Speaking of which, when will you guarantee that the Sage 100 Partner of Record will get compensation for EVERY migration to Intacct? The current "claiming" of customers engenders no faith in the process. We want clarification.

    - We were confused by the two examples used for Sage 100-to-Intacct conversions. (Actually, since they were both v4.5, they were MAS 90-to-Intacct.) These seemed to be customers who had essentially decided that upgrading their Sage software was not a good investment for the past decade, so they had never experienced the myriad of new functionality they could have had with a current Sage 100 implementation. Surely these are not the only Intacct migrations you've had success with? How about some more realistic examples?

    - There are certainly some current Sage 100 customers who are a good fit to seriously consider Intacct. However, MANY are not. Manufacturing customers are top of that list. Most Distribution customers are probably not, especially the complicated ones. These others might well be looking to shift from Sage because the public messaging clearly says to them, "Sage 100 is not our long-term future." (And if they don't read it that way themselves, believe me, the competition is translating it to them.) What programs do you have or plan to help us retain these customers? Yes, I know you have your ISV series, and those are helpful. BUT we already have problems managing upgrades when some third-parties are slow and unreliable at keeping up. Why increase the risk with these newbies? Or maybe Sage just expects these customers to wait on Sage Intacct to be reliably effective for their migration?

I think most of us 90 Minders had already received your message that "Sage 100 customers should migrate to Intacct." We understood the strategic reasons for this. (We don't like it, but we understand it.) We want you to help us make our current (non-GLAPR) Sage 100 customers MORE confident that they can stick with their current "anchor application" while gaining the added functionality that gleams as "shiny objects" from competing systems like Acumatica and Netsuite. Most companies change out their ERP systems with a change in either General Manager or CFO/Controller; we want you to help us buffer that drive.

Phuong, I hope this helps your thinking in how to "make it up to" us.

Hey Jerry - thanks for your feedback. We'll be discussing just about all of your questions on the call but I think one comment should be addressed now. 100 is a winning solution for Sage and it's a big part of our portfolio. We are marketing it and I'm working on revamping the Sage webpage now to make it more user friendly and to show how much we are investing in this product line. Further, my first request to our 100 PAC when I joined was to solicit more customer stories. We have 3 in the pipeline and one just finished that we'll be promoting as part of our 2021.0 release.

If you have a customer you'd like us to spotlight, please fill out this submission form.

I'm looking forward to the bonus event. I hope to see you there.

Thanks. I am looking forward to the information and discussion.

Success stories are always a good thing. In today's selling environment, it would be good, almost necessary, to hear about customers who chose Sage 100 while also considering competitive solutions. Also, hearing from partners who recently sold new Sage 100 deals is very helpful. For the past several years, the majority of any new Sage 100 customers had a senior financial person who had used Sage 100 in their last job and felt most comfortable not buying something different. That's good, but I hope we have cases beyond that.

    Phuong,

Not quite what you were asking about but related:  If Sage wants everyone to be on subscription, when is Sage going to be able to handle it in the way people expect?  One of the main advertised advantages of subscription is flexibility.  Since MOTM, I have had two incidents (out of two requested changes) that have been way more work and time than they should have.
    (1)  Customer asked for a quote on switching from Essentials Bundle to Advanced Bundle - took over a week to get it.
    (2)  Customer asked to switch from Annual to Monthly to take effect on their upcoming renewal date.  We were given a quote, which they signed, and then we were told it would need to be done again because the quote had expired.  The effective date was part of the original quote request.

In contrast, when I ran out of unattended seat licenses for Zoho Assist, I logged into my account, selected the next level up on my subscription, and within two minutes got back a receipt in my email and was able to set up another unattended remote support computer.

Indeed, this is not what I was asking for but I appreciate you bringing this to my attention. I've sent this to our ops team and their guidance is that we're transitioning internal systems at the moment to make quotes and requests like this easier to manage but we're still early in this process so we cannot comment just yet. They are aware of this issue and are working to ensure this new internal tool helps alleviate this issue.

I was also hoping to learn more about the plans for Production Management (work order).  We have several Sage 100 work order accounts that need to seriously consider Acumatica because features are missing in Production Management, Scanco has not delivered on features needed and is charging maintenance on products that are discontinued, and Sage has said absolutely nothing about the future of Production Management.

Sage Intacct is a great product but is not a solution for every Sage 100 account.  What is the plan for Sage 100.

We have also had many issues with subscription renewals but customers now expect problems since this has been happening for so many years.

    Phuong,

What are the planned Sage 100 system architecture upgrades?  It was a nice surprise to see 64-bit program architecture announced (...I'd not heard a whisper of this until it was announced as done).  What's next?  A full (non-SPC) web-based workstation client?  Convert Standard / Advanced to a more modern / secure database platform?  Make enhancements which allow full system functionality without users requiring Full Control over the MAS90 folder contents (which puts the system at high risk of damage from crypto viruses)?  Anything else?

Steve M.'s O365 connector demos have shown real potential, but as far as I know Sage only supports the Sage Contacts use of the interface.  What's the intended path forward to getting this into Live customer systems?  (Sage in the lead, partners in the lead, developers in the lead...)?

When everybody in the 90 Minds Sage 100 community sees all the questions, it helps their thinking about aspects they hadn't quite crystallized, which in turn helps their understanding of their Sage 100 environment so they can better communicate to their customers.

Here are the answers to the remaining questions from the Q&A session. Please note, there are a few questions we needed more time with so we'll update the doc once I have those answers. I anticipate finalizing it next week but I didn't want to hold the document for such few questions. Please keep this confidential and please do not share this document.

To those of you who took the survey - thanks! I saw many of you were as frustrated with the Q&A widget not working as I was. This ended up being more work for us and our team as you can see. Although that one aspect wasn't ideal, I am glad we had this bonus session to reconnect and I'm glad to see so many of you appreciated the myth busting content.

I'm not sure the following is accurate - I have a Sage customer who I upgraded and is definitely using SI with Premium

4.7 Sage Intelligence is not compatible with Sage 100 Premium? What are you recommending instead? Depending on the customer's needs, we recommend Sage Enterprise Intelligence or the newly released Sage Data and Analytics.

There is a separate conversion/upgrade required for the report layouts so perhaps the issues is -
    • SI reports created in Premium (SQL) version are not compatible with Non-SQL SI versions and visa-versa.
I'm not sure if you can take Premium ->Standard or Advanced but I took SI reports from Standard and exported them into SI connected to premium which definitely worked ( but it's not seamless )

This also vague and requires clarification because Sage is historically very bad at providing any type of communication ( especially when it involves bad or negative news ) to customers.

1.4 What part of the PM plan can we share with prospects? We ask you not share any of the PM plan with customers until Sage has had a chance to publicly announce it.

This is not really a solution since the ISVS are going to wait for PU1 for initial release which in turn causes customers and consultants to delay implementation 90 days past PU1 ( which means same as last year it's a September initial release for some ISV  solutions).

IMO there needs to be a plan to get this release down to a point where ISVs are expected to release the same week as Sage's release. Clearly Sage has no power to dictate this to third parties not on the price list but for those on the price list this should be one of the key components of the requirement to stay on the list. Is this going to be hard to do? Yes. But it needs to be done if Sage expects to achieve it's goal of becoming a great SaaS company.

4.4 What should be our realistic expectations for development partners to keep up with new releases? Sage expects our development partners to stay current with our new releases within 90 days of a release. We have changed our development cycle to release one major enhancement update per year to reduce the amount of time development partners need to evaluate and react to new updates.

4.5 When is 2021 Product Update 1 scheduled? June 2021.

Phuong, thank you for the responses here. The rapid turn-around was great.

Since we didn't see the list of original questions, could you please list those questions you're still addressing?

Can IRP be used without PM to report on raw material demands through multiple layers of Bills?

IRP can be used without PM to report on raw material demands through multiple layers of Bills as long as the bill is exploded on the Sales Order.

Or in other words - NO, IRP can't be used without PM for multiple layers of bills.

@Phuong Nguyen - a couple weeks ago you told us, "there are a few questions we needed more time with so we'll update the doc once I have those answers. I anticipate finalizing it next week." Can you give us any further guidance on when we might see these answered?

    Thanks.

Hey Jeff – I've been OOO so our timelines had to be pushed back. I'll work to get these up by next Wednesday.

    Hi all,

Here is the final version of the 90 Minds Bonus session Q&A. As you can imagine, composing answers right at the beginning of our launch week fact took much longer as the team's availability was constrained to manage the launch and we had some folks go OOO here and there right after launch. Thanks for your patience.

The remaining 5 questions are at the very end and start with 4.10 onwards. Instead of weaving them throughout the doc, I figured this would be the best way to make sure that if you're looking for your question, then it'd be with all of the other unreleased questions.

    Thanks Phuong,
Your efforts to answer these questions are very much appreciated.

One point to clarify, for #4.9 (from my perspective): the perception I have of little being invested in Sage 100 comes not on the marketing side, but in the actual technical product itself.  There are significant elements of the back end program which still use 20+ year old technology.  Paperless office has had recurring known problems for as long as I have worked with Sage 100.  I can't be in a Sage Intelligence report and click "refresh" to bring in current data (as can be done in alternative products).  Requiring (functionally / technically) security of the MAS90 folder be: users = full control... does not exactly live well in the age of the crypto-virus.  Upgrading the technology, and keeping on top of program fixes... everything seems to progress so slowly.
What I've seen demonstrated by Steve M. with the Office 365 connector is a huge step in the right direction (towards modernization), but unless Sage uses that infrastructure to release a fully functional and supported web based workstation platform (for on premise servers), I don't see the value for most of us (who are not app developers).

Well said @Kevin Moyes.  Steve M has been demoing how cool things could be with the API interfaces for a few years, but try to find any concrete documentation for replication of his demonstrated features.  We routinely get calls from clients using 3rd party applications asking for Sage's API's so they can connect.  We usually come back with "just send us a flat file".  That is one example of the 20 year old technology you mention.

Further on @Kevin Moyes point:  Steve M's MOTM session demonstrated the creation and use of the MS Power Platform to create API endpoints for Sage 100. These apps were very cool and would be very useful to end users.  It's great to know this technology exists and to know what's possible, and at the same time frustrating to know that either I need to spend time developing these apps myself or hope that Sage or someone else sees the value that I do and takes the initiative to develop them for all of us.  I dream that Sage would take the initiative and surprise us all by rolling out these dreams for everyone to use.

Thank you @Phuong Nguyen your effort to provide details and information is greatly appreciated.  Additionally, I do have questions on how Sage Inventory Advisor addresses Forecasted Demand, and if forecasted in SIA, are Bills and Sub-Assemblies also exploded?  Is there someone I can reach out to; to discuss this problem?

@Madeline Stefanou - We have two clients using SIA to forecast and it does explode through all levels of the bill of materials.  It also separates the item demand from upper level forecasts from forecasts for the item itself.  Both clients switched from WO/MRP to PM/SIA.  SIA is a powerful tool that took some time to get configured and get the users trained and accustomed to working with it.

We also have one client that bought it and did the implementation and training working directly with SIA (Netstock) and they are now looking at scaling back their use of the product.  Unless the client has a person with a very good understanding of Sage and the setup of their system you will want to be involved in the implementation to bridge the gap between Sage and DIA.

Sage had a dedicated SIA contact Tom Wilson tom.wilson@sage.com, not sure if he is still there or not but he was always very helpful and had a recorded demo available too.

Thanks much for the additional information Phuong.
I noticed in question 4.8 it says "Sage Intelligence is not compatible with Sage 100 Premuim?  What are you recommending instead? "
We have several clients using Sage Intelligence with Sage 100 Premium and it works fine for them.

@Bernie Lehman, we too, have Sage 100 Premium clients with pretty significant Sage Intelligence use.  I was scratching my head a bit at that comment.

Hey Bernie – thanks for calling this out. I double checked with Kevin and Linda and here's what they said:

Sage Intelligence is compatible with Sage 100 Premium but depending on the customer's needs, we recommend Sage Enterprise Intelligence or the newly released Sage Data and Analytics.
