Any excitement at the MOTM conference?  If so, where can I read all about it?  Yes, I have seen a couple post on the 90M Twitter feed, but how about some "meaty" posts about what is going on?  Is the APP available for everyone or just attendees?  What's the buzz, tell us what is happening.  I hope the Vegas rules aren't in force.....

    We missed you.

    TL;DR:
    • Based on the APP for the conference we had about 125 people - and this seemed to be broken out almost equally between consultants and affiliates
    • Sage brought 12 people including a couple relevant higher level folks ( Possibly the best Sage presentation in years ). - they're still limping through PM so the presentation did not have much "meat" as to future development plans. The fact that Sage brought 12 relevant representatives sent a message to me that they are still dedicated to this product.
    • Sage Partner Cloud was presented on one Sage slide as Native Cloud
    • I went to Alnoor's scripting which was amazing and every Sage 100 consultant should attend even if they never want to write a script after the class. Just having the understanding of what can be done as well as about 100 sample scripts was well worth the time. For me this is something that justified the entire trip.
    • Lots of talk about Production Management - Jane Scanlon and Gil Ponte held a great session comparing and contrasting WO, PM, OM.  Very interactive with lots of members asking questions. Just like the good old days.
    • Affiliate presentations were well received and kept to the allotted time
    • New(ish) Product Marketing Manager Dianetta King was impressive during her presentation - it's not easy to get up in front of our group for the first few times and I thought she did a really good job and came across as very bright.
    • The Sage engineering people ( Elliott, Steve, John Nichols ) were at the conference almost the entire time. Ronnie Aspe also attended. I may have unintentionally missed a few others. Being in Newport Beach CA definitely made it easier for some of the local Sage people to attend for a longer period of time than they would have in prior years.
    • I roomed with Jim Woodhead - he is a Sage Partner Cloud evangelist and big believer in that platform. If you have questions about SPC - he is a good resource.
    • I think the ROI for this conference was probably different for each person depending on what they were looking to get out of it
    • Production Management still seems to be consuming a lot of development attention which means there was not much of a roadmap that was shared
    • The Mod Squad had a great presentation on the items that they are compiling in a spreadsheet for possible future development. I had a chance to ask Sage why we couldn't get an unattended rebuild sort files.  I think Alnoor has previously explained the issue which as best I understand rolls down to (a) Sage may not have full access to rebuilt sorts in protected software programs - which replace standard rebuild sorts code with custom code that includes the base rebuilt sorts plus custom secret code to rebuild their own program(s) ( think Scanco WMS as an example ) and (2) Rebuild sorts is old non-framework code and probably a project to rewrite ( and test/debug ). Possibly something could be done that's not a full rebuild but is more of a recallcuation on SO, WO, PO, LOT/Serial recalc. Nothing for sure here but just the general chit chat around this topic. I would like to see this list of mods being considered shared as a read-only to the group ( perhaps it already is and I missed it )
    • I asked engineering  whether Sage could somehow  prompt when an update of data files is required after installing a PU or Payroll update. Elliott had a good point that f Sage kicked off an update of data that it could negatively impact a company that has a bunch of old archive company data flies ( think about what a pain that would be if Sage automatically started updating Payroll 1.x archive companies ). So maybe a good middle ground is a notification at the end of the update to remind the consultant/user to go in an manually convert the companies that need converting ( this seems like a good option ).
    • My .02 - the path forward for easily managing Sage 100 is the cloud - which I see as either Cloud hosting ( SPC or external ) - or for companies that have the staff Terminal Services. Almost all the annoying inherent problems in Sage 100 ( Workstation Synch, managing user workstation setups ) .  I do not think Sage will be able to materially improve the process to setup and configure workstations in a "regular" network environment however that process is quite a bit easier in a Cloud/Terminal Server environment.
Overall a good conference given that there's not much non-PM related to be discussed by Sage. Hopefully they cross the PM hurdle within the next two releases and we can get back on track with a more normal development schedule with features designed for non-MFG customers.

Well it has been a week!  Unless the posts are somewhere else, I haven't seen a thing about the conference.  No pictures of anyone have a great time at casino night, no posts about the tremendous Sage presentation (...about Intacct), no save the date for NEXT year's event and most IMPORTANTLY, NO posts about the new BOD leadership.  WHO are the newbies on the board.  WHO will be setting the sails for the 90M cruise ship direction.  Who is the next Capt Stubing?  It is very hard to get excited about an event when there is no BUZZ (before or after).  Where's the buzz, tell me what is happening!!!!!

@Anne Sawyer - Yes, putting on a conference is a lot of work.  I know because I worked with @Therese Logeais and @Jim Woodhead on many of the early ones.  Hats off to your and your conference team.  Your days of rest are well earned.

But the election was completed before the event started.  A press release should have been written before the meeting and released/posted within minutes (or an hour) after the balloons dropped on the winners.  Maybe I am the only one concerned but I am willing to bet there are many others.  The membership deserves better.

PS  Hope you were able to chillax at Disneyland!

Hi Jeff! I'm pleased to tell you that I'm the new Capt Stubing. I'm so encouraged by the board that we have assembled and I expect we will see great things for 90 Minds. We missed you at the conference! It was amazing to see everyone again and remember that we are not just lonely soldiers in the foxhole. My favorite parts of the conference (other than real, live people) were the respect that Sage showed with their presentations and the expo for the ISVs. I felt that the sessions were informative and often the attendees wanted to keep going after the time was up! Alnoor's scripting class is always worth the price of admission and the tidbits learned from Steve Malmgren and Carmen Cruz among others will save me lots of time in the future. I hope you can make it next year!

Of course not.  No one needs to know the secrets of the night.  But what I am advocating for is a little marketing buzz on HL for the non attendees to get some inkling of the presentations and what they missed.  A little sizzle to make you think of steak.  I did pick up some twitter posts but nothing beyond that.  So something that would make me want to attend next year.  So far, nothing, nada, zip.

@Jeff Schwenk  The presentations are an important part of MOTM.  I rank the presentations about third or fourth on the priority list of reasons I attend MOTM.  Number one is meeting people in person that we interact with on an almost daily basis throughout the year.  Getting out of the office and changing up the work environment, attending some fun events... dueling pianos, casino night, happy hours, lunchtime podcasts. reviewing new offering that vendors have available.  Some members went out to local restaurants, played golf, or went for a swim.

Your friends and colleagues want to see you there next year Jeff.  Consider going even if you don't see any sizzle in the presentation descriptions.

    Speaking of Sage showing respect:

    - Their presentation incorporated significant advice from 90 Minds regarding how to get the most from their presence. I don't think we've been able to do this before. Certainly, Anne made a significant effort to herd those cats, but it also shows their improved attitude.

    - Dianna Lane pointed out that Sage sending Luc Mathiot to our event was a Big Deal. He is the global head of BMS products (Sage 100, 300, X3, etc.) He is French (so imagine my initial reaction when I first heard him -- "Is he the second coming of 'Fuck Us'?"), but he was pretty good! His presence was more a show of support than any big presentation.

    - I talked with Dianna for a bit (she also lives in Austin -- we've had lunch together here). She made it pretty clear Sage now intends to route almost all Sage 100 partner attention through 90 Minds. The Partner Summit in Dallas has nothing on Sage 100 (except migrating to Intacct), and Sage thinks working with 90 Minds is the best way to support Sage 100 customers.

    - I do think that Sage has come to realize that they must do some active marketing of Sage 100 to new customers. They MUST keep their current installed base long enough to improve Intacct enough to offer distribution and mfg functionality to those customers. This will take years (whether it's 2 or 10 is anybody's guess), and unless current customers can see obvious evidence that Sage is behind their product, many won't stick around for Intacct to be ready for them. I don't think Sage saw this need for NCA marketing until a few months ago. While Sage at MOTM was not ready to explicitly state that Sage 100 is the current product to meet dist and mfg customers, they didn't argue that such a conclusion is wrong. IMO, that is significant. This would be a tactical, not strategic, development, but would be very good 90 Minds and our members.

In years before 2020-21, Sage was decidedly ambivalent about supporting MOTM and 90 Minds. @Moira Goggin did a great job of wrestling them to the ground and spending significant money on us, but it seemed like we were swimming upstream. It seems to me that Sage NA now has a far more productive attitude now that they see we have a significant potential to help them meet their Sage 100 customer retention goals.

    >>In years before 2020-21, Sage was decidedly ambivalent about supporting MOTM and 90 Minds.

As someone who was around during that time period I actually know what happened and the reality is not as portrayed.

The biggest recurring myth is that nobody figured out how to host an event or generate revenues from MOTM for 11 years. Check the financials after the bills are settled and get back to me on that myth if I'm wrong. Check my profile for 10 years of live event photos. I think we were doing pretty well.

Sage has been involved almost every year of the event. However their presentations have been haphazard at best. I'm not sure ambivalent is the word. More like scattered and unprepared ( in most years ).

After being told that someone on the engineering team is going to be our Sage liaison as opposed to my repeated recommendation that we needed to go higher - I was glad to see Luc appear and I hope for the sake of the Sage 100 product line that Sage continues to provide that level of support.

Candidlly I did stop suggesting these things after being met consistently with with "oh we know".

    Now you know.

    Posted 05-22-2022 13:21
Wayne is absolutely correct. I'm sorry that my narrative could be read to mean anything contrary to Wayne's clarification. And I certainly did not mean to imply that "nobody figured out how to host an event or generate revenues from MOTM for 11 years." Wayne left a very financially healthy organization when he stepped away a half-dozen years ago. (The only money-losing MOTM was the virtual event we held in 2021, certainly a learning experience for everybody.)

I am only familiar with MOTM planning for the past 6 years I've been on the Board; I was only speaking to those years, which didn't overlap with Wayne's.

Dealing with Sage for MOTM has always been a challenge, as it would be for any other very large firm headquartered outside of America; the personal relationships that Wayne and others had with the "Irvine Old Guard" were probably the only way to cut through that. All investments must come out of somebody's budget and these are, at least loosely, ranked by some Boss in order of estimated ROI against his/her goals used to judge job performance. A half-dozen years ago Sage seemed confused about how to proceed in N. America; some observers even thought Sage UK was entertaining the idea of selling without a VAR channel. Then, in early 2020, Sage announced its sweeping emphasis on Intacct with Sage 100 customers as a holding pool for future migrations. Remember last year's confusing message to us during the virtual MOTM? Marketing investments in non-Intacct channel marketing (90 Minds) were not easy to justify.

My take from Board internal discussions during the past year is that some key people in Sage NA have come to agree with 90 Minds feedback that they must invest some modest sums in Sage 100 marketing in order to meet its longer-term goals of maximizing migrations of these customers to Intacct; they can't just promote Intacct. They now seem to understand that keeping those customers will not be as easy as they originally thought and that 90 Minds is probably the most efficient way to increase that retention. I also think that comments during a recent 90 Minds Engineering Roundtable helped to further that understanding.

The business environment that 90 Minds must deal with now is quite different from 11 years ago. MOTM used to be the only ERP industry event in that Feb-Mar slot; now there are many. Product competition is also very different now, which makes coming up with programs that offer good ROI for our members to invest in (coming to MOTM is not cheap!) always a challenge.

So it's good news that Sage now sees 90 Minds as its primary conduit to the Sage 100 channel that it will need for at least a few more years; this probably means the 90 Minds membership and MOTM attendance will become even more valuable to our consultants than in the past.

Again, I apologize for my earlier confusion.
