Migrating to Premium - files in use

  • 1.  Migrating to Premium - files in use

    Posted 10-17-2020 09:47
Hello! Trying to migrate a customer from v2019 Advanced to v2019 Premium.
Install runs fine, but when I run the parallel migration task, I get to the point that its moving system files & it says the file is use & just exits.

Then, I can't restart the migration. It will then not get past the login to SQL & just exits again. I have to remove everything & start over.
I have nobody else in the server. I am running as the System Administrator. I am running the task as admin. All services that touched the old Sage are completely disabled. I have not even run the workstation or service startup for the Premium version to not have anything in the way.
The servers have been completely rebooted numerous times. The application where this is being installed is the same location where Advanced was & on a separate server than SQL. IT says all AV is disabled on the servers.

My test install on another machine & migration to the same SQL server worked fine.

    Please help! Thanks in advance.

When nothing else looks obvious, reboot the server(s)

Sounds like one of the files is locked up even though you are a system administrator. Try changing the Owner of the MAS90 folder and everything below it. Make sure Administrator is the owner.  You can also remove all inherited permissions and reassign them. Something might have been assigned an explicit permission which is not allowing even the system administrator to access it. Finally, make sure you can copy and paste activate.pvx. That file always has weird permissions. Good luck.

You could eliminate whether Windows files in the install path are in use (and by which process) with the Windows OpenFiles command. You will need Administrator access:

    OpenFiles /Local ON

You may get a message to reboot if this setting was not already ON

OpenFiles /Query /fo CSV > C:\OpenFiles.csv (or another path of your choice)

You may need to open the file in Notepad if it doesn't open in Excel. Then search for the folder where your install is located.

    Hi Dana

I had something very similar to this a couple months back.  If you haven't already - try running the parallel migration wizard with elevated permissions ("Run As Administrator") AND use the 'sa' credentials for the SQL server.
    Hope this helps!!!

    Thanks for everyone's input.
I had tried everything else you all recommended, rebooting, looking at open files, security, ownership, logged in as Administrator & running as Admin.

It ended up being that I was putting the program back in the same place it used to be & Sage didn't like that. I've done that when migrating from Std to Adv, but going from Adv to Premium required me to put it in a new location.

Hope this helps someone else in the future.

We always use the year / version in the server path... makes it easier to know where the version specific files are when doing upgrades.

    Same here - I usually create a folder \acct.
    Within that folder, I'll store
    \acct\paperless ( so I don't have to move it unless there's a server move )
    \acct\sagedisks
    \acct\vxxxx ( version of Sage installed )

@Wayne Schulz and @Kevin Moyes... What about the location for the repository for SAGE Intelligence (SI) files?

We either put SI repositories inside the version specific folders, or create a folder with the version in the folder name.
    \Sage####\SageIntelligence\
    or
    \SageIntelligence####\

And our habit is to put install files inside the version specific folders too... which IT doesn't always like because of backup configurations, but it does make things easier finding what we need, especially when it comes to enhancements.  Plus removing old versions is easier, when everything specific to that version is in one folder.
Paperless is not version specific and always stored outside the version specific folders.

When we setup accounts we have a top level folder
    Sage

then below that we have multiple folders
Installs (which has the install for Sage and any 3rd party. Within this folder is each vendor folder and in that folder is version specific.)
Paperless (which has the paperless files. I do not put this version specific so you do not have to move them each time you upgrade)
vX.XX (This is the version specific folder ie v6.00 for installing Sage to. This is where the MAS90 folder is)

Under the vX.XX folder is where we put the folder Repository

When upgrading this allows for a vX.XX to exist for the new version which will have its own Repository folder within it.

The goal is to have everything related to Sage in the Sage folder. Everything related to a specific version in the version specific folder. We keep installs in one location. Some documentation or KB articles may relate to one or more version and this allows us to keep it all in the one place.

Even though this is a somewhat mundane subject I think it would be an awesome web session to compare notes. And also to compare notes on how we all approach upgrades - staging, testing, go live.

@Wayne Schulz, I agree with your comment.  Seems like we all have methodology that is pretty similar.  For example we create version folder which contains a sub-folder for the install files including sage updates & MD enhancement installs.  ..Sage\Sage2020  We create paperless and SI folder shares at the top level Sage folder so they don't have to be moved with new versions unless moving to a new server.  We always work from a copy of the original ..\MAS90 folder., etc.  would be interesting to compare notes on the differences.

AFAIK SI repositories have to be created for each upgrade.

@Kevin Moyes - haven't had to do that since 2015, 2016, somewhere in there.  Now you just make sure it's still pointing to the same place and it still works after an upgrade without all of that other crap you used to have to do.

    For the original question:
    • Always make a backup of MAS90 (folder) and MAS_System (SQL database) for your target version before starting the migration utility to Premium.  This allows you to restore / reset without uninstall / reinstall.
    • I like to migrate from a folder copy for upgrades from Standard / Advanced, so I can always restart with a fresh copy (if the migration utility does something odd to the source system).
