Might be time to grab an Outlook email address before your favorite is gone

Hmm. very interesting. I've been a reluctant hotmail user for a long time (I have the plugin for desktop outlook that usually isolates me from the web client). I was just thinking to myself earlier today that other than the cluttered first screen you get after login, its come a really long way and reminded me alot of how great the Outlook 2010 Web Client is and wondered if it had anything in common. Then I read your link, flipped the switch and voila, its the new interface. That being said, it seems much more like a thematic face lift, not a new UI. That's not a bad thing, just that they had so improved the old UI that it looks like they just reskinned it with the Metro look & feel, but its probably running the same overall code. Only thing that appears to be missing, at it might be a setting is the ability to sure your Live Messenger info within the main screen which is handy when your not on your regular PC. I really think the gmail webclient with the 2 pane view leaves alot to be desired. When you start doing replies and replies, the indenting makes it rediculous to read what you want and the 'conversation mode' on the android client just sucks. Of course I use Ad Block Plus and get alot of real estate back

@WayneSchulz Hmm, just used the new link over to Skydrive, and then went into the Word Web App for editing. HOLY CRAP, its all new and looks killer. Full look and feel equivalent to desktop word. Google Docs looks like childs play compared to this. Never count Microsoft out. Looks like they got the memo that its 'back against the wall time' and unlike RIM, they aren't going quietly into the night

What looks a bit odd is that when you jump to Skydrive it kicks you into the old MS UI.... which leads me to believe you are correct in assuming that the UI is updated and probably not underlying code. There are also a lot of other places where things are not matching in terms of UI. The Gmail interface clearly could use a few coats of paint...

I saw that and though the same thing. Once you go into your skydrive document it has the new look. In all fairness, all the 'new stuff' comes with a big 'beta warning' sticker initially so Microsoft still has some more pieces of the puzzle to finish before it looks holistic. But clearly they are moving along nicely and I have to say I like the Metro look. Very clean and efficient

Speaking of Metro, this would be a cool theme for 90minds.com what do you think? http://touchality.com/blog/

Definitely would want to see how it looked on tablet first.

If you want to reserve more than one @outlook email (someone noted that wayne.schulz and wayneschulz are two different emails) -- go to ""more mail settings"" and select ""create a outlook alias"". This appears to let you reserve multiple emails without having to create multiple separate accounts. Hard to imagine you will be able to create many useful aliases after today (ie sales@outlook would probably have to be sales15221@outlook)

Seems to display nicely on my Galaxy S3 using Chrome. It's not special though, it's the same site. The Large Square 'tiles' work well with your finger. I bet its much nicer on a larger tablet From: do-not-reply@socialcast.com [mailto:do-not-reply@socialcast.com] On Behalf Of Wayne Schulz Sent: Tuesday, July 31, 2012 3:56 PM To: Mark Chinsky Subject: Re: [90 Minds Consulting Group] Microsoft Did the Impossible: The New Hotmail Is Fantastic

That's exactly how it worked on Hotmail. You can have up to 5 alias accounts. I'm pretty sure this is the same engine as Hotmail, just a new skin. Not that that is bad. The spam filter is excellent and the later iterations worked plenty well. Plus you can embed it in your local outlook with the Hotmail plugin (which I guess they'll have to rename Outlook) Now MS has do to some brand consolidation (and I know its in the works). You have Live, Hotmail, Office, Skydrive, MSN etc. Apple has many fewer 'brands' for many services. I think they have to pick an overall name, and not have it be 'Live.' Perhaps like Apple based everything around 'I', make it all around 'X' since the Xbox has done a very good job at creating an entity that is sticking. Interesting. If you had an email like mchinsky@hotmail.com you can 'switch' it to mchinsky@outlook.com. It will still put any inbound email into your new name, and even let you separate it into another folder. Prevents you from having to essentially switch to a new email address if you want to get away from the tarnished hotmail brand image (which is one notch above an aol address

Hmm- I have a wayne.schulz@live and it allowed me to create a wayne.schulz@outlook.com -- which would seem to preclude me from migrating?

That's a good question. I don't know if you can link it up after. I wonder if it would allow you to delete the account and reuse it.

The next version of outlook desktop better make outlook.com a native option (not a plugin like hotmail) and outlook.com should be Microsoft's way of offering low cost cloud hosted business email instead of exchange.

I think Outlook.com should replace Microsoft's ill-advised Office365 and the umpteen confusing options which primarily seem designed to up-sell you until your pass out from exhaustion

One complaint about outlook.com. There is no way to 'shift select' a range of messages to delete. This is really inefficient when doing bulk cleanup and moves

Actually noticed gmail doesn't support it either. Went back to my old yahoo mail account, and have to say, very impressed. Shift select works, and its darn close to a desktop app. Gmail actually looks pretty lame compared to the other solutions.

Shift-select in Gmail works for me. Just click on the first message, hold down shift, then click on the last message (in the checkboxes).

@DawnAnastasi AHH....It works for both gmail AND outlook.com. That's weird that it only works when done over the checkboxes and not the whole row like outlook desktop and Yahoo mail. Not very intuitive.
