MICR - Preview okay but won't print

  • 1.  MICR - Preview okay but won't print

    Posted 11-10-2020 18:43
It should be so simple. New upgrade to Sage 100 Advanced 2020 (6.20.0.1). Client uses MICR checks so we installed the font and the preview of the check shows the MICR line with the correct encoding but if I print to PDF or to the physical printer the MICR line is gone. Not plain text or gibberish - just gone. The same thing happens with a standard check form. Full rights, no ODBC security turned on. The client is Citrix which adds complexity and their IT is saying they need a new printer but if that is the case shouldn't the print to PDF at least work? I copied their custom check form to my system and the MICR prints as expected so I don't believe it is the check form. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Thank you!

Could be the print driver used doesn't like the MICR font?  Did you try to "print" using the Microsoft PDF printer?  If that works, you know the driver is the issue.

Hi Kevin! I did print to Microsoft PDF and saw the same issue - no MICR line. Does that eliminate the driver issue or is it possible that the PDF and the physical printer have the same issue?

I'm not sure.  If you want to test, preview, then from there print to the MS PDF printer, save it then look.

Is the cs odbc driver activated for this user?  Try another workstation that isn't a terminal server?

CS ODBC isn't activated for any of the users we have tested. We could try printing directly off the server. I don't think the physical printer is installed there but Print to PDF should still be an option!

I'd also question the font install (corrupted / permissions...).

Where/what MICR font was used? I’ve always installed the eFiling and used their font. It can be confusing to find because IIRC there are a couple MICR fonts that show up.

@Wayne Schulz - I installed eFiling and used the Aatrix MICR font. It is the one that is in Sage's KB article.

Is the printer associated with the Crystal form?  I would look closely at the print driver and possibly experiment with replacing it and also assigning the printer to the Crystal form (file, page setup).

Also make sure the MICR font is installed on all of the computers that can possibly render the print job.  Crystal renders the print job locally, however, since you are using Citrix, the printers are mapped from the Citrix client to user computer.  To cover all bases, and rule out an uninstalled or incorrect font, I would make sure the MICR fonts are installed on the Citrix client, the user computer, the print server, and the Sage server.

Thank you - these are excellent suggestions and I will connect with the client and update on (hopefully) a solution!

With the new run time for Crystal Reports using .Net you will find that fonts will preview fine on the designer but when running through the runtime viewer it will not. This is .net not allowing fonts that are not true type from displaying. In this case you have to use font substitution in the driver to have a font that the runtime will see and then when the job is passed to the windows printer driver it is substituted with the MICR font you wish to use.

That is very interesting Todd... yet Sage says v2013+ includes a True Type font?  Link.

Is the true type one, the one that is being used through?

I did use the efiling to install the MICR font and I believe the IT department installed the actual .TTF file. Todd - I think you have posted this somewhere but can you point me towards instructions on how to do the font substitute?

I would have to find it but if you know you have the MICR as True Type then make sure the Crystal Report is using it and not a non TT first.

Client's external IT thinks that the printer isn't new enough to handle the TTF file. Or at least it can't support any new drivers so they have ordered a new printer that should be in place tomorrow and hopefully this will be resolved!
