MAS 90/200 seems to only look at the first 10 or 12 characters of a printer name. Can anyone confirm or deny this? Thanks.

Sounds about right. Have a client I have to keep reminding IT every time they get a new printer, because they get a laser with 3 trays and hard-code the trays to 3 different printer drivers. And when they start them all the same, chaos ensues. But if they put the tray number first, all is swell (mostly).

Does this have anything to do with MAS 90 remembering the printer name on a form (e.g. inventory labels)?

The reason I asked was from experiences we have had with various clients running MAS 90/200 on terminal servers. We found we needed to define remote printers on the server and stop sharing the client printers to the server for every site where there was more than one user. When users shared their printers to the server, we ended up with multiple copies of each printer on the server and MAS seemed to get very confused. It either would not print or we got reports that looked like they had been run throught the printer twice with poor registration. Recently, we got an orphan that was printing checks via a printer defined on their terminal server but was sending a check copy (using Multi-Part) to a printer that was shared from a number of workstations. Sometimes checks would print and sometimes not. We created a new printer on the server to handle the check copies that had a unique name. Unfortunately, I just added the word ""Copies"" after the check printer name and the first 12 characters happened to be identical. At that point, both the checks and check copies printed on the printer where the copies were supposed to go. Apparently the newest printer is higher on the list. @Beth Bowers Trays have often been a challenge for clients but I never tumbled to why. @Dawn Anastasi I don't think so as we have had good luck with forms being remembered. We don't have many clients that print inventory labels. Is there a specific issue with inventory label forms?

My client says that the label forms since upgrading to 4.40 sometimes remember the printer, sometimes they don't. I haven't been able to reproduce it.

Hmm what version of MAS 90/200. There is no looking at just the 1st 10-12 characters I know of. What happens is gets the printer's device name and starts stripping out extra characters in the string so it can set the printer. Depending on MAS version, and whether module is BF, with TS and Citrix, it has more characters to strip. What might be happening is both of the multi-part printers get stripped down to the same string of characters. There are some commands via SYZCON we can run on their system to find out if u want to troubleshoot.

@Dawn, We have had several clients complain that various forms don't remember the settings reliably , especially after an upgrade; however, when on the phone with the client, we couldn't reproduce it either. Several have multiple Sales Order and Picking Sheet versions and several locations where they print. Occasionally, I have asked about it and the response is it doesn't happen very often now. I am thinking people are getting better at checking and correction if necessary. @Alnoor The recent pair of installs are at 4.3 and 4.4; however, this issue has been around for a long time. We have had numerous situations over the years where we had difficulty getting stuff to come out on the right tray, even though we setup multiple printers definitions with the tray preset as Beth mentioned. We have occasional issues where the client just claimed stuff went to the wrong printer. I just figured it was just looking at the length but I can see it must also have to strip invalid characters. My most recent situation (4.3 on TS) was where the check printer was called ""GNCC CHECK"" and a second printer called ""GNCC CHECK COPY"" was created to replace a workstation shared printer. With this definition in Multipart, both the check and copy went to ""GNCC CHECK COPY"". As Beth mentioned, changing the name so the first part was unique corrected the issue. Why it might strip the word COPY is beyond me. Perhaps it is having more than one space to strip. I think making the first part of printer names unique will cure the issue virtually all the time but it would be nice to know what the limits are.

I have had the problem with Checks in 4.30 and 4.40 not keeping their printer (and I KNOW only one person prints checks) and I put the printer to Multipart, where it stays and I have no problems.

@BethBowers - We had that problem with @JeffSchwenk for A/P checks and @DawnAnastasi for some S/O form. What ended up working was going into the .rpt itself and unchecking the No Printer checkbox and pointing it the correct printer and tray and then saving the .rpt @JohnBroadfoot - Yes I agree making the printer name unique via initial characters will work. I think there's much more to the logic than just striping out the word COPY in TS/Citrix. When I get a chance I'll check it out some more.

The inventory label printing doesn't allow for multi-part.
