MAS 200 over a VPN: Wondering if anyone can lend some feedback on this. Client wants to run MAS 200 over a VPN and they'd like to know what the minimum/recommended bandwidth requirements are. They will eventually have a 10mb fiber connection. As far as I can tell, it appears running MAS over a VPN isn't ideal or necessarily recommended, and that RDP / Terminal Services / Citrix is typically recommended. But otherwise running over a VPN should probably be ""okay"" but possibly not for heavy usage for a given user. Is that a fair assessment? I did locate the attached info in the 4.50 SPM.

That's a fair assessment. I'd still recommend using TS over a VPN if at all possible.

Sage says the time should be around the 30's but that isn't really realistic for most vpn connections unless you have a very big pipe. Most of our vpn customers have around 80 or so on the time when you ping the connection. We have found that the 4.4 and greater (those with inventory changes) that VPN has become very slow for them. Prior to the 4.4 the speed was good enough for them to run the client without needing TS. The ODBC cs helps but only with printing. The slowness we see if going from screen to screen. The requests over the network were too much once inventory hit the new business objects. I have not tried 2013. If all connections will be on the 10mb fiber then it might not be an issue. All of our VPN customers are on at least 2 bonded t1 connections for the primary location and a t1 at the remote. DSL didn't work so well. Really need fiber or cable connection. T1 is OK not really enough unless you bond a few of them together.

Back in the day, we had several clients who ran MAS 200 over slower connections, such as a T1, VPN, or DSL connection with decent results. However, that was under 3x technology. Recently, our experiences have been significantly less positive under the new framework. I have a client who tried to run across a VPN and experienced a great amount of speed degradation. I don't have the specs on the speed but up speeds were 5 mb or higher (which is the equivalent of 3.3333 T1 at 1.5 mb each). They run core, distribution, mfg, Sage CRM, Star Ship, and a few other gems. Creating an SO integrated with a CRM opportunity took several minutes to save. SO Invoice posting took a couple minutes per transaction. It worked but not in the realm of what anyone would call acceptable. TS resolved most of the speed issues. I'm thrilled with the new framework and will gladly give up remote processing for the improvements gained. We just won't go back to operating over a remote session over a VPN again in the foreseeable future unless improvements are made to the based system. If the client to server connection is less than 100 mb, we ain't playin' the remote workstation game.
