If you own an Ipad 2 and have a family member that wants an ipad, by all means buy it and keep the new one. (That's my situation. I gave my ipad2, to the 'soon to be ex')
If you only have an ipad 1, definitely buy it.
If you occasionally use Your ipad 2, unless you have $600 burning a hole in your pocket, don't buy it.
If you need reading glasses to read a newspaper, you will need them to appreciate the Retina screen difference. And it IS different (although I find it has a 'warmer' temperature color to it which takes a little getting used to)
I haven't perceived any speed difference, but I think the excess horsepower is traded off by the extra pixels that need driving.
Side by side, I do notice the thickness difference (athough my old tight form fitting back case seems to fit it just fine...odd) and I feel the weight difference. Honestly, I feel the ipad 2 is too heavy, this isn't going in the right direction.
If you are an Apple 'fanboy', you already bought it.
If you are @WayneSchulz , you already own it since you own every premier device ever made :)
I feel there is definitely a market for a 7"" ipad (rumors are they are working on one). Of course I love the big screen, but I rarely have this thing with me to be handy enough since guys don't have large handbags and I already have a laptop for a laptop bag. It's just too heavy and bulky to whip and and use all the time like a phone.
Whereas my son's Kindle (which if apple made that 7"" size) the device would be alot thinner and lighter is realy handy. I know women that keep their kindle in normal size pocket books (not happening with an ipad).
i'm almost intrigued by the new Samsung Galaxy note. I think clothes companies need to start to redesign pockets etc to take into account new devices and habits. Some small changes would allow you to keep a 5.5"" 'superphone/tablet' like the galaxy note, comfortably in your pocket in a way that doesn't look any geekier than a regular pocket.
I have no idea how you guys survive with your tiny 3.5"" iphone screens.
