Love it when the customer texts me shortly after 7 AM to tell me their internet is down and they can't access inventory. Hmm. Upon further questioning, it appears someone was rebuilding files last night and MAY have reinitialized one or more of them. HE says everything was working last night when he left but now they get error 60 in program IM_Item_ui.pvc(?). Their internet is indeed down so no connection available. May have to swing by on my way to another appointment I have this morning. Going to be one of those days...

Well, at least you have a car! I committed to an off site meeting for this AM yesterday. When I walked out of the house to hop in the car, it wasn't there. I then remembered it was at the dealership (since Friday) getting a new transmission (last week was a VERY expensive week for me). OMG, the mind is going fast!

It must have been all the goodies you were delivering for the 90 Minds meet-up. Are you adding a transmission replacement to your expense report?

Yep, he reinitialized ALL of the IM files instead of rebuilding them. When I asked why he was rebuilding files, he said they had phantom issues so the boss asked him to rebuild files. Should have called me... NEED TO GET KTA/SLA IN PLACE!!!

An excellent time to introduce the idea - they have fresh pain which was avoidable.

One hopes their backup is current, though it sounds like they may have lost a day of IM transactions which will be interesting in how to recover JUST one day of IM transactions............ Might also review security role maintenance to keep people from doing stupid things......

We have a client where the IT manager reinitialized inventory data files. He no longer works there - not because he did that, but because he tried to cover it up.

Well, here's an update. Not sure the boss knows what exactly happened. She seems to think they had an issue on the 17th when trying to update their sales journal. ""No, Mary, that would not erase your entire IM system."" Their latest backup is from 7/11, from which they've restored IMXXX. I've written a Crystal report pulling all item detail from AR_InvoiceHistory and from PO_ReceiptHistory to hopefully, import into IM Transaction Entry. They have about 10 IM transactions in Paperless they will have to manually re-enter and they have made changes to their standard costs (their valuation method) so those will have to be done again. I will NOT be posting to GL so I think they should be fairly close. I offered the option of doing a complete physical and she said, ""Hmm. It takes about six of us eight hours to do a physical count, all at overtime. I think not at this time."" And I am going to have my trusted IT firm give her a call about backups. Will let you know how it goes....

@JohnHoyt And those who think they have backups in place but don't and those who do. @MarkChinsky I was waiting for you to chime in. She's looking. I'll keep you in mind.

An update: The customer is somewhat back in shape except for one thing - the Total Qty on Hand in CI_Item is now incorrect. It had the correct quantities to begin with but now that I have imported IM transactions to account for sales, receipts and returns, it is off. The warehouse quantities ARE correct; it's just the ones in CI_Item. Does recalc'ing item history correct this? TIA.

    4.4.5 I believe.

  • 19.  RE: Love it when the customer texts me shortly after 7

And no, it does not update CI_Item. Any other thoughts besides calculating and importing them???

  • 20.  RE: Love it when the customer texts me shortly after 7

    Posted 08-01-2013 07:53
Hmm, it doesn't look like I can import Total Qty on Hand. How the heck are you supposed to correct this??

Wonder if the v4.5 utility would work for you?

A script could be used. It can go around business logic.

Btw. I just had a client reinitialize all the work order files thinking he was rebuilding them Yikes. Is the moon full ???

Really, I've told many times that scripting has to follow the rules also....

@AlnoorCassim may be able to give you the data dictionary hack to make the field importable.

DSD had IMFX which rebuilds from history though I don't know if it addresses your particular situation. I had a customer use it after changing fiscal years and it worked great. Not sure on the CI_ITEM impact though.

    @AlnoorCassim ??

  • 32.  RE: Love it when the customer texts me shortly after 7

    Posted 08-01-2013 10:04
I would like to know how scripting can ""go around"" business logic. @JimWoodhead if there's a class on that - I'm interested. The TotalQuantityOnHand field is Read-Only so I don't know a way that scripting can help you there. Perhaps @AlnoorCassim knows a PVX scripting approach that will.

  • 33.  RE: Love it when the customer texts me shortly after 7

    Posted 08-01-2013 10:32
The read only is a dictionary rule (bus object references the dict to validate) so removing the Read Only would make the field update able using VI, scripting, BOI, whatever (from wherever the SetValue is coming from). In this case where we are on 4.45 SQL one single properly formed SQL UPDATE statement would take care of it. No dict changes needed. It's a fun quick nerd project for IT guy or yourself. Anyway am in car in hopeless search of a non-mediocre summer camp for the kid so not near a PC. If you can search on previous posts on this topic the technique is the same which is DFDM find the table in DDF get the numeric key for it. Then find the key in DDE then keep moving to next record until the correct field is found. Then very carefully remove the ReadOnly in the large string or set it to zero. Backup DDE first.

Partial notes on modifying dictionary https://www.evernote.com/shard/s1/sh/f5cd3e25-6234-4736-bd7d-61c30431d21d/11471dee52d5f6ebcff2cb444226bdd6

The UPDATE query would be fast. I am not a native SQL kind of guy (beyond the basics), but if you have MS Access available one could created an UPDATE query - with the SQL Server database as a backend - that could pull from the warehouse tables and write the TotalQuantityOnHand field completely bypassing MAS and the dictionary issue altogether.

Actually I had just finished trying to have a grown up conversation with a teen-ager put in charge of running a summer camp for kids and I was failing badly. Hard questions like ""Can we buy lunch or do we bring a sack lunch from home"" was answered with ""umm yeah"" and ""Can I register in your office or do I have to go online"" with ""oh don't worry he'll be fine"". I think I need a teens and tweens language pack update for my universal translator. O maybe I should've texted her the questions. As an experiment I asked 'How much liability insurance do you carry?"" and she said said ""we do recommend you having medical insurance for your child because sometimes accidents happen in the gym"" ... <pause> ... ""if you were asking about the fee it's $225/wk per child with a $10 off sibling discount"".

You're the best @AlnoorCassim !!! Changed ReadOnly to 0 and I'm now able to import TotalQuantityOnHand! Did I mention you're the bestest ever???

Aww shucks @ThereseLogeais but what I really need is for @MarkKotyla or @JeffSchwenk to let me borrow their universal translator with the teens and tweens language pack

My girlfriend Jennifer runs a daycare. Nearly 100% of communication with her staff (virtually all recent high school grads or college students) is text message. They think nothing of texting at 2am to tell her that they're ""sick"" and can't come in the next day.

@AlnoorCassim - How did the week of camp go? Did you get the camp counselor a job offer at Sage? Did the kids write home every day?
