Also, heads up, check with a Production Management guru -- If I recall, the ability to auto-assign lots/serials during PM wasn't in the initial build. This may have been fixed so I am not claiming that it's not there ( only to verify with someone more familiar with PM ).
WO does allow for auto assigning lot/serial as you note.
And, I think you are correct WRT 1 and 2 above.
I have a Sage 100 users who makes use of lots for high-end audio equipment.
In their case they also have the same question about assigning the lot/serial sequentially when the item ships. Their business case is that until the unit goes out the door they really don't need a serial/lot number on it. They wanted to apply the label during shipping which would fit with your question about auto-distributing the lot/serial during shipping. My concern on this practice is what happens when shipping doesn't put a serial number on a series of items and they go out without numbers. This has kept them on the path of applying the serial numbers during production.
We also had to make some changes to the order/invoice to display the serial numbers in a more condensed fashion on the form.
