After a week mine has starting knocking down the fixed schedule I had initially setup when we make repeated manual overrides. The automatic firmware update today happened concurrent with histograms appearing on he setting area of the home.nest.com/home Web page - so I can't tell what was due to the initial data gathering period and what was due to this upgrade. Overall, I am blow away with this product not only for the techy aspect, but what a market! Who doesn't need one of these. Just today I used the feature of turning down the temp after leaving the house. The newly upgrded air conditioner optimization features sound good too. Will likely by one for the business too and keep an eye on how the employees override the temp from the same Web page apparently.

Interesting product. Thanks for posting the recommendation and observations. I wonder if it get's confused when a spouse turns the temperature down and the other turns it up in the space of an hour? I'd really like a product that would monitor the open state of the garage door and close it based on a learned schedule, or if the house doors were locked, or the iron was off (even though it has auto-shutoff), if the dog was in the house, when the food in the fridge is within three days of expiration and on it goes. I suppose that's why people have household staff.

@MyronStevenson Perhaps the most mind blowing thing about this product is that the gate is open and we'll never get the cows back in. Every appliance and electronic feature in the house is a potential network appliance. Maybe even the dog! The image below shows Tuesday exploded and the cloud symbol notes days with below average consumption.

Are we predicting RFID chips soon to be on the T-Bones and the dog's collar has a cellular chp with integrated GPS? I suppose the consumer market might drive these products. Just look how that market changed the smartphone industry. A new credit card carme today with a microchip in it (I believe it is RFID). Personally, I'm looking at a Viper remote start for the truck. When you leave the hockey game and the truck is 300 yards away it would be nice to start the vehicle using the phone when it is -20 outside and the wind is off the big lake here in MN. Fact is the truck is now connected (through the phone and Sirius). It reads text messages. It would be great if it could read and respond verbally to Socialcast posts. This Nest product is the tip of the iceberg.

RFID = I have Google Wallet in my Galaxy Nexus - I cannot wait for another year or two when I can toss out every credit card. If you think about it - the concept of carrying credit cards is a tad old fashioned. At the very least there should be one master card that can hold all our info.
