Sage 100

Does anyone know of an item numbering validation tool? Customer wants consistent numbering based on several factors. Think GL numbering with sub accounts. So if I'm entering a new item number, the various 'segments' would have to validate against a sort of UDT for each 'segment'. 

Call me crazy if you'd like otherwise, let me know of options!

You are not crazy at all, and neither is your client.  Many moons ago (Basic 4 days), I built a part segment program for setting up motorcycle chains, which is very specific on size, width, number of links (length), lubrication, and torque load.  So I understand exactly what the customer is looking for.  Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any off the shelf mods that will do what you are looking for.

Item segment processing sounds like an interesting mod.

I agree, @Bob Sosbee - while I haven't had anyone ask about it in a while, I know of customers who are DOING it, manually, and would benefit from such a thing.​

@Dan Burleson​​ does incredible stuff with scripting and Access DB (or potentially UDT's in this case).  When in doubt, give a shout to Dan.

You couldn't use a "Column Pre-Validate" script on ItemCode b/c it's a key field, but in similar situations, I use a "Table Set Default Values" event script that validates the ItemCode (in your case - against UDTs) and, if it fails, invoke the cancel button and send a message.
