It looks like BOM component items inherit the COGS account from the parent item. If the component items belong to a different product line with a different COGS account, is it possible to have COGS split between the two COGS accounts when posting an invoice?

Can't answer the question, but wouldn't that kill any analytical work for margin analysis? An unusual request.

well they track retail and master cartons as inventory items ( it's material enough for them to do so I guess). They added those inv items to the bill so they could do cost rollups. However they want their cartons to hit their own cogs account. in their industry showing what percentage of cogs is related to packaging materials is important. I showed them the inventory sales analysis report and few other ways to look at the cogs for those items. but i figured it wouldn't hurt to ask to see if it was possible to do it the way they wanted...

Are they exploded on the SO and Sales order invoice?

if the item is a BOM (un-exploded line item on SO) then a production entry is needed to move the parent into FG. That process should then pull the components listed on the BOM from inventory using the component's product line GL accounts for posting. You are saying that this is not the case? After verifying the accounts are set up correctly in Product Line Maint for the component, I would look at any enhancement, modifiction and/or customization that has the potential to impact these areas in MAS. The inventory Item pull on a BM Production Entry should use each item's PL posting accounts as seen in PL Maint. when entry is updated.

@Joan Serr is right, when posting a production entry to put the parent item to inventory the component GL accounts are used. When posting an invoice to sell the parent item from inventory the GL accounts from the parent item are used.

Thanks for clarifying @BernieLehman - I let the customer know that he should focus on setting up the product lines and GL accounts for the parent items and worry less about the component items.
