Is there anything special on the server or laptop

Is there anything special on the server or laptop that should be done to run workstation setup across a VPN connection? Customer is claiming WkSetup (v2016 Advanced) is taking 2-3 hours when users are connected to the VPN and in a remote location (vs in the corporate office). Firewall settings, etc.? Server 2012. Thanks

Don't do it! Set up a terminal server and don't have the client directly on remote machines...

You need dedicated bandwidth. Ping the server from the workstation. From the 2016 Advanced, Supported Platform Matrix: ""Typical ping timings with 1,800 bytes of data should be 2030 milliseconds or faster. Unacceptable ping speeds are over 40 milliseconds."".

I'm in the ""don't do it"" camp, from an operational standpoint. Every click / lookup / action will be agony for the user. Why is the install slow? One of the install files is over 300MB, and that has to be copied over to the workstation. The VPN may have a bandwidth throttle per user.

They are going to be using CRM mainly but going into Sage too from CRM. Since Advanced, can we copy over the WKsetup folder (zip and ftp) to the laptop and run, pointing it to the server/port?

On the same premise - they are wanting to print Custom Sage quotes/orders rather than using CRM Built In Quotes. Taking 9 mn to print, when I turn on CS ODBC for the users, it speeds up to 4 mn but form is blank. Why would the CS ODBC cause the form to be blank. We're trying to accommodate before telling them they have to use the CRM Built In Quote.

Even if Advanced works for data entry, it will likely crash for any reports or forms since Crystal sends data back to the workstation.

elaborating on Doug's comment you'll want to decrease the ping/packet loss/bandwidth as much as possible in other sites we have had the user come into the office to install the workstation then working remotely via vpn was ok. We also had to update the host file to include the server name properly (and as always make sure you are on the same domain). Forest level sites can work however additional planning/naming. however I agree RDP is the better way to go honestly. a quick way to decrease packet loss is to use a network cable rather than wifi (with windows 7 turning wifi off is also helpful when you hard wire, I'm not sure on windows 10 or windows 8). update: the host file was used to fix a crystal reports error, I think it was due to the vpn configuration.

If you're on hourly with this customer just give them a written recommendation (I'd copy/paste these replies and take out everyone's names). Then sit back and start making your holiday shopping list because you're going to make some support money.

Dedicated bandwidth is expensive so unless there are a large number of remote users it may be cost prohibitive. As others have mentioned remote desktop and/or Citrix receiver are less expensive solutions.

Check the ODBC tab in Role Maintenance in regards to the blank form. When CS ODBC then rights have to be given in Role Maintenance on the ODBC tab.
