  • 1.  Is the End near for v2017 PR????

    Posted 02-05-2021 12:13
Just had an interesting (panicky) phone call from client running v2017 PR.  They have started the journey to PR 2.21 but they have 38 companies to go.  Sage is telling them that on Feb 14th, the v2017 PR is being shut down.  For him, it has been a WTF moment.

Has anyone else heard this?  Have I been living a sheltered COVID life?  Is the end TRULY near?

If they are a Sage Accountant client or have an NFR copy, yes, 2017 will stop working.  I have been dealing with a number of CPA firms who are not happy.  They only got notified in the middle of December I think that this was going to happen. This is what was sent to them:

"Please use KB 82689. Access to the payroll module requires an active payroll subscription plan. Channel Partners and Sage Accountants Network (SAN) members are given NFR (Not For Resale) activation keys and programs; the payroll expiration date is hard-coded into the program in NFR versions and CANNOT BE CHANGED. If a Channel Partner or SAN member is running a 2017 version of Sage 100 access to the payroll module has expired as of 12/31/2020, and they MUST upgrade to a supported version. (NFR versions of Sage 100 2018 will have payroll expiration of 12/31/2021, Sage 100 2019 expiration of 12/31/2022, etc.)"

Channel Partners/SANS have special "Not For Resale" (NFR) versions of Sage 100 where the expiration dates are hardcoded on each version

Sage 100 2017 will have expiration date 12/31/2020

Sage 100 2018 will have expiration date 12/31/2021

Sage 100 2019 will have expiration date 12/31/2022

Sage 100 2020 will have expiration date 12/31/2023

Channel Partners/SANS getting Expiration messages, they are still running Sage 100 2017, which has been retired, and they must upgrade to a supported version, preferably 2020.1, and Payroll 2.21.0 if running Payroll.

The upgrades are free and accessible thru our knowledgebase. They will use the same product keys

    Thanks.

Great communication to the SAN CPA's.  Now I know why they recommend Sage so frequently!!

That explains the emergency upgrade I am covered up with a SAN partner. 100s of client companies with Payroll!

I had noticed that expiration date in ours, but didn't grasp the impact.

I don't like this at all. We need access to old versions!

Your Payroll subscription has expired. You can continue processing payroll for 9 days.
Please contact Sage before 02/14/21 to renew your subscription.

We experienced the same thing as @Diana Laughner.  Found out when we were attempting to help clients still using 2017 (mostly because of integrations and 3rd party enhancements) process their W-2's this year.  Our own reseller copy of 2017 kept coming up with the "Your payroll subscription has expired.  You'll be able to use the system for 45 days before you'll have to renew."  However, the system printed "Demo Copy" on everything, even though it told us we had the 45 days from January 1st.  And indeed, the Payroll Subscription expiration date in our 2017 versions is indeed 12/31/20.  We weren't informed that our 2017 would be unusable to process W2's for 2017 clients this year, so it is good to know that at least some folks had a heads up via the Sage letter.  We didn't receive that letter, so we really had to scamble.

Trying to help the clients with their Year End Processes is just getting harder and harder these days with some of the new rules that Sage is implementing.  Clients' systems still work – it is only the Reseller and SANs systems that apparently do not.  But it is angering many clients/SAN members.  To the point many of them are looking at other software.  Big sigh.

I sent a note off to our Sage "handler" and copied Jeff Scott on it.  Frankly, this is ridiculous!  Where is the COMMUNICATION!!  I work with two SAN CPA's and they both complain about how incredibly hard it is to get information out of Sage!  Shouldn't Sage be making it EASY for CPA's???  Where is Sage's head?  They need to get it out in the sunlight!  They blew the SAN program 15 years ago and now history is repeating itself.  Good Heavens.  Does Sage have a session at VMOTM next month?

I WAS supposed to be on vacation next week.  Guess I am doing a 38 company migration now.

Many people at Sage are completely ignorant of real-world conditions.

I remember seriously being asked: "why doesn't everyone run on the latest version?!?"
I could rattle off a dozen good reasons off the top of my head, to a deer-in-the-headlights audience, knowing some people just don't understand what life looks like beyond their marketing bubble.

I see your 38 and raise you 202 (240 companies).

    Ha, 38 companies. Child's play.

If you email Kevin Kawado at Sage (Kevin.Kawado@sage.com), he can give you keys that will extend your v2017 Reference Library for another year.  Sage obviously really wants all of us to be on current versions, and have the clients on current versions, but the KB article that said you have no choice but to upgrade, is not entirely true.  And the reality of the situation is, we do have clients still using 2017 because of integrations or custom mods that clients aren't ready to pay for again just yet.

I did ask Kevin if I could post this information on 90Minds, and he agreed, so if you do want to extend your v2017 Ref Library, let him know and he'll make it be so.

I’m not apologizing or trying make this right. Just noting that this was decided upon a few years ago. I remember seeing the warning buried somewhere in the KB at least once. I think it was after the prior issue with PR keys expiring.

Sage is guilty of poor communication. Are they guilty of not supporting an old version of payroll that they’ve been very vocal about not supporting? IMO, no.

Due to the constant rotation of all levels of Sage management - both local and global - they’d be well served by some working product groups that involve partners and are more than (BPAC) margin preservation or ( Product Advisor ) let us tell you what we are releasing next Monday.

P.S. It is my personal opinion that payroll support is in most cases the customer using a VAR because it’s cheaper than ADP/Paychex. I have very few payroll customers left and advise everyone who can ( doesn’t need integrated payroll ) to research using outsourced services. I’ve been through more than a few issues where a customer tried to pin a bad tax code setup on me and I am just not interested in re-entering the tax and accounting advice world.
