  • 1.  Is PM And IRP Ready For Everyday Use?

    Posted 04-29-2021 06:12
I have a customer ( a couple actually ) who use Work Order and their production area is inquiring about using Production Management and IRP.
They’ve seen the videos in YouTube and feel it’s a perfect fit.

I’m not a MFG expert. So my role will be to advise them on what the reality is and to guide them on their journey.

From discussions here it doesn’t seem like Production Management is widely implemented in other than early adopter cases.

    Am I wrong?

My impression is that PM is a 1.0 type release, isn’t at feature parity with WO ( one big issue I spotted here a while ago that I don’t know if it has been resolved is an inability to auto assign serial numbers during a build) and candidly had a confusing number of patches that all need to be individually applied.

It also doesn’t seem like IRP is available. Or is it available and fully functional at MRP feature parity?

I’d like to gather more updated info because YouTube and web marketing are leading these customers to desire the migration to PM and IRP.

If it’s ready I don’t want to be pissing on anyone’s corn flakes and I want to help this customer start migrating by first providing some feedback on what they can expect.

I fully expect them to ignore the feedback or partially listen but I am going to provide it and I hope to gather some first hand comments here.

    TIA

I should add this is a site with around 5 different companies where each location is somewhat independent ( grown from acquisition ) so that adds some complexity to any migration as well.

"Pissing on anyone's corn flakes"?  Now THAT is a new one for me!  Must remember not to sit next to you at breakfast......

Not sure if ANYONE knows a thing about PM.  As we all heard a couple weeks back, PM is not up to Sage programming standards and it will be one plus years before new lipstick is applied (I apologize to all pigs for this comparison)!!!  And in the meantime, who know how many WO users will abandon the HMS Sage due to their over milking of the proverbial cow.  Show me the love.........AGAIN!

In the meantime, maybe your client should look at Operations Management.  A little pricier, a little more complicated, but a slightly newer code base.

There are two issues that are preventing us from moving clients from WO to PM, and the biggest of those is Projected Demand.  Apparently Projected Demand is not available in the PM/IRP combo and that's a killer for most of our folks moving from WO & MRP to PM & IRP.  The second major factor is that only the first level of BOM's are exploded, and most of our clients have parts made out of other components, and need to have the items exploded to more than just the first level.  (I thought the Work Order History not converting would be a big issue, but we don't seem to get that far once we explain that Projected Demand is not available.)  Sage's answer to the lack of Projected Demand has been to use Inventory Advisor, but two of our clients have said IA it doesn't replace their existing Projected Demand needs.

(And - I did a head tilt at the "pissing on anyone's cornflakes"...that's a picture I won't be able to get out of my head for awhile!)

According to Sage's roadmap it will be two years before the answer to your question is yes

Sue's comment is spot on as to why customers will not be giving up WO and MRP. Although projected demand in MRP has always been funky the way it works, once you master it, at least it works. If you remember the roll out of PM at the last live Summit in Atlanta, IRP was not part of that and followed 2-3 months after that. Excited to see that, we quickly discovered there was no projected demand function, so we would need to keep MRP for that, except there is no integration to IRP. MRP still integrates with Component Exception Manager in Operations Management, so that is the option, as Jeff mentioned. But . . . don't upgrade to Sage 100 Premium, because MRP is not compatible. I asked Linda Cade at the virtual MOTM about when they were going to add projected demand, and she said not before at least version 2022. Apparently nothing new is happening with PM until Sage brings it up to their standards, since they will be responsible for further support and development, although there is nothing official (in writing) about that status.

The work around of entering pro forma ("fake") sales orders to create demand is not acceptable for public companies. I mentioned that in a demo for a large company and they immediately shouted at me. I'm glad it was remote and I could mute them!

Could SIA not fill in the gap of Projected Demand?  We have clients without Work Order and just BOM successfully using SIA to place demand for component requirements based on SO line items with bills.  And at least one client with JObOps using SIA for purchasing.  The downside is SIA does not create Work Tickets or Work Orders but does project requirements for the parts needed to be made.
