Hey Dawn. I heard that same report on Friday evening on my ride home from work. I thought that was a very interesting corollary. In the case of the Red Cross, they were forced to charge for doughnuts by the US Army in World War II to avoid an issue with the British Government. Soldiers may have forgotten the reason why but they didn't forget the issue, even it if didn't affect them directly.
Drawing a correlation between this experience and web services that try to move from a free model to a paid-for model may or may-not be valid but it is valid concern.
