I realize this thread has been around for a while, but I wanted to jump in and share a solution we've recently proposed after encountering the same issue with another client. Hopefully, this approach will be helpful to others facing similar challenges.
Here's the plan we're proposing: Step one will be to clean up any inactive items that currently appear on Bills of Material or existing Work Tickets. To kick this off, DWD will create Crystal Reports that help identify all such items. Once the inactive items are flagged, the client will take responsibility for removing them from the relevant Bills of Material and Work Tickets.
For step two, we're focusing on preventing these issues from cropping up in the future. DWD will add scripting code to Inventory Item Maintenance, which will stop users from marking an item as inactive if it still appears on a Bill of Material or Work Ticket. When someone tries to inactivate an item, a pop-up will display all associated Bills of Materials or Work Tickets containing that item. The item can only be inactivated once the necessary corrections are made.
We're also implementing scripting in Bill of Materials Maintenance to prevent users from adding a component to a Bill of Material if it's inactive. The same kind of scripting will be used in Work Ticket Entry to block inactive components from being added.
One thing to note: Users will still be able to add an item to a material issue transaction, BOM production entry, or manually add it to a work ticket and dynamically issue it there. We decided not to explore scripting for these scenarios since it wasn't relevant for this particular client.
I wanted to share this solution with the group in case it proves useful for anyone else. If you have thoughts or additional suggestions, I'd love to hear them!
