I have a customer who has been kicking the tires on Avalara for about the past 70 years.

I don't think they're ever going to go with Avalara ( but they may tire kick a time or two more).

Have you been involved with downloading the Avalara Zip rates and ( importing ) setting them up manually in Sage?

    https://www.avalara.com/taxrates/en/download-tax-tables.html

If so, how much effort is involved? I'm hugely afraid of scope creep.

    Thanks for any feedback!

Just curious - are they worrying about more than one state?  I wouldn't worry about keeping the tables updated as much as picking the right code for the customer - if it's a state where there are more than just state taxes (like GA having Atlanta city rates, or the locations in CA, etc).

They are selling into some multi-tax locations like NY and CA. So far they compute the tax manually.

My guess is they’ll continue to do it manually ( outside Sage and just plug in the computed tax ) rather than pay anything to setup rates to automatically compute.

My experience is most people go this route until the first audit.

@Wayne Schulz, what did you determine on this?  My answer has been Avalara when asked about feeding rates into Sage.

They signed up with Avalara ( read this summary of what I've found working with Avalara to be like ). I haven't heard of any reasonable alternatives to Avalara and the sales tax problem is going to get continue growing as states reach farther and farther for revenues.

Explaining to the customer the scope of the Avalara project and pricing in a project for my services at the outset are two things I will definitely do prior to ever getting involved with a new Avalara.
