I received this question from a client: Is there a VM (virtual module) that works with Microsoft Hyper-V available for the Sage 100 software? If so, what is required for us to use it and can we get documentation on the process to move over to that platform? Do they need something special to install Sage 100 to Hyper-V?

Check the SPM for details. I have several installs running in a VM environment. For the most part, they are running well.

You should not need anything ""special"" or additional to install Sage 100 on a VM or Virtual Server. If your client is moving to the Microsoft Hyper-V platform, they will have their IT company do all the necessary work; including setting up the new server (Physical Device) and the Virtual Server(s). Once the server is ready, it is no different than them choosing to purchase a new server for their Business Application(s). You would install the software then migrate the System Files ,Data and Paperless Office documents to the new (Virtual) server. I would recommend re-doing workstation setups to point to the new server. There are quite a few good articles out on the internet explaining the concept of Hyper-V.

I also have many clients using a virtual environment, but this is the first using Hyper-V and the IT people are convinced they need a special installation procedure for Hyper-V.

If the client has internal IT, get them to send their IT to a class on Hyper-V. If it's a consultant, they should look for another. Try a conversation with your finance contact, Controller or other, to tell them, ""Once a virtual image is setup in Hyper-V, we put Logmein or RDP onto the server image, and it behaves just like a physical server. I'm happy you are taking advantage of the flexibility in VM's, but you should send an IT consultant to training, or get them look up the issues in either MS TechNet, DZone, ExpertsExchange, or Spiceworks. For IT, there are some issues to cover, but for apps and users, they act the same has physical servers."" The question either got garbled in translation to you, or their IT is now 5 years behind the times.

OK - got more info. The IT guy wanted an VM module that would allow you to install Sage 100 without having to purchase an operating system for the server. Dynamics a module that doesn't require an operating system on the Hyper-V server and will allow you to install as if there were an operating system. So because the Dynamics has one he thought Sage 100 might too. IT guy wanted this because then he wouldn't have to worry with server updates.

Doesn't sound right. Nothing runs without an OS. I'm with Jerry on this one.
