I need to estimate the initial size of the Sage CR

I need to estimate the initial size of the Sage CRM data base for a proposal. Prospects IT staff has asked for the information in order to size the install correctly and to get an idea of how much data the back up is going to handle every night. Does any one have any rule of thumb that would get me ball park figure? Currently, they are not using any CRM so the initial population would be based on the MAS Customer master which has about 10,000 records.

Jeff - I have to say this question is kind of ... strange. Are they really worried about this in a day and age where Terrabytes can be purchased for $100 - $200? :) Regardless of my editorializing... the database will be less (much less) than 1 GB to begin. My sample database with 2000 company records and 4000 communication records is around 120 MB - that's Megabytes. Their real needs can only be assessed based on how much they will use the system to record ongoing interactions and proposals. Either way, you aren't talking about a lot of space requirements. Our largest clients with millions of records have databases under 25GB. If they start using the Document Library feature to store documents, it could balloon up faster to accomodate the documents but this should be a wash from backing up the files wherever they are currently to backing them up under the CRM folder.

One customer of mine that is very heavy in usage on their SageCRM currently has a database size of about 3 GB.

Dawn - I'm going to guess that they have not been tuned up? How many company records? How many communication records? How many Opportunity records? How is their system performance?

Question is more geared toward off site back up via the internet at night so that they have enough band width to get everything done by day break. Currently, their thought is to transfer data to owner's PC in his basement (let's not go there). And yes, another option would be to purchase a couple external drives and back the data up and then the owner can carry the external drives over. Prospect wants to avoid being down for a week (as was the case when he had to restore his AS400). Needless to say that prospect is a bit quirky. And yes, all this could be avoided if Gary Feldman hosted their site.

:) I like the comment about Gary hosting their site. It's hard to say how much they will use the system Jeff but I would imagine that it will be less than a GB for the first year. Not sure how long that will take to back up over the internet. Back in the day, I would suggest full backups every night to a tape device and either take the tapes off site or put them in a fire proof safe. I know folks love their Internet things these days so I'm sure that's not an option. :)

Thanks. I caution against using fire proof safes as they may not be heat proof. How do you measure the inside temperature of the safe and at what point do the tapes/external hard drives become unusable? Off site storage is always the safest...............

They can host on site and we can back up to the internet. We charge based upon storage space used after compression and de-duplciation. Easy, cheap and branded n your name.

Gary, do you have anything for NON mas people? I have an IT partner that uses Intenet backups for his clients. Thought I would send him one of yours.

Its the same software. It backs up anything pretty much from any OS. SQL client whole nine yards. We just branded it for Sage at Insights, for SAP at ASUG, etc. Ben Glazer is the person to contact 678-627-0646 x223

In my testing for this prospect, the MAS data folder compressed is about 20% of the original.

Jeff we have done a lot of testing but the initial upload is not really representative of what customers can store in CRM. If they will be storing documents and contracts, emails, tasks, appointments, etc... the database size will vary. Just based on 10000 master records you should be well under 1Gig
