I have a customer who sells paper. They price in either hundredweight (CWT) or per 1000 sheets (MSHT). They need to pick by the carton (CTN) and sell by the CTN. They need to purchase by either the sheet (SHT) or 1000 sheets (MSHT). There are so many units of measure involved. We're trying to figure out the best way to use the units of measure. Right now, they have extended decimal precision extended solutions (still on 4.10) and would like to upgrade to version 4.50 and just go with the 4 decimal places there. They are currently pricing in CWT (the std UOM), selling in CTN, and buying in SHT. But they are using 6 decimals for the unit of measure conversion factor and that's still not enough as they sometimes wind up with 0.001 cartons left in inventory. We've modified the pick sheet to convert from CWT to CTN so that the pickers can pick. Any other thoughts on how your customers have done this?

How do they want to count it when they do physicals? That would be your starting point since how they count it would be the standard unit of measure.

Well the warehouse wants to count it by CTN. But the problem is that it's priced either by MSHT or by CWT. The standard UOM is used for both counting and for pricing, and in this case we can't have two standard UOMs. MAS 200 can't price by an alternate UOM.

How many sheets in a carton?

It varies per product. One product is 1500 sheets, another is 1250, another is 2500, etc. It depends on the weight of the paper.

What is the minimum order amount? If they are selling in hundred weights, how many decimal points right do they go?

That's the thing -- they are selling in the CTN but *pricing* by either the CWT or MSHT. This is very complicated. Right now they are using the 6-decimal precision for the UOM conversion factor. They want to get away from that.

If they count in cartons it seems to reason that they purchase ""whole"" cartons. So ""pricing"" is only for reference. If that's the case, then use the four category fields in IM to setup for CWT Price, CWT Cost, or MSHT Price, MSHT Cost and one for # of cwt/msht per carton. Since these are text fields you won't be limited by 4 decimal maximum of a UDF/std field. The category fields are then available in SO and PO forms and can be printed or used in a formula on the form. Once you take the CWT/MSHT out of the equation of UM, you can set the Standard, Purchase and Sales UM to carton.
