I have a client that doesn't want to go to full warehouse automation but would like to use a 2D barcode scanner to scan barcodes with a inventory item code and a lot number. Can it be done without a warehouse automation add-on?

What do they want to scan INTO - like inventory transactions, physical count, etc? I have several clients who setup their own scanners for physical counts and I wrote the VI job to bring the info in for them.

You can get scanners that just send keystrokes to the system. I have a couple of clients that use scanners without warehouse automation for certain tasks.

I have several clients that print a bar code label for all ROG receipts coming in the door. They scan the inventory count into Excel, then summarize via a pivot table and final import via VI. Saves them boat loads of time. We also print the SO number of the pick ticket as a bar code which is used to pull the information into Worldship. Another client uses the bar code SO number from the work ticket (modified SO) when processing the invoice at the service counter (tire dealer). All the bar code is is a machine readable image that is scanned instead of manually keying the data. Any touch point where data is keying into MAS is a potential use of a bar code. Bar code the customer number on the AR statement. When it is returned with the payment, scan it instead of keying. Lots of potential for showing the client how to save time..............

In previous job we had scanners at all the work stations in shipping and receiving to scan in item numbers and serial numbers. They plug into the USB port. You don't need anything other than the scanner.

Thank you all for the help. The client wants to scan the inventory into Receipt of Goods and then out during shipping. Louis - was your client using a 2D bar code scanner? I know MAS can read a regular bar code but the 2D barcode has horizontal and vertical codes intertwined in my client's case it will be item number and lot number - and I don't know if MAS can distinguish what number is what. Am I making this harder than it really is? (I've been known to do that!)

Jane, what you will need is some sort of program that will parse the values into separate fields and then write to MAS. What version of MAS are they using? You may be able to do this with a script.

They are using MAS 200 version 4.4.
