How to fix account category/type for accounts with posted data

@MarkChinsky did you blog this? I was going to turn it into a blog if you don't. We have a monthly blog requirement and this would be perfect.

I don't think I've ever done that - what are the steps, I'd be happy to do it. Or if it's easier for one of you to do it rather than explain the process, go for it!

I didn't do it. I didn't quite understand what he meant by 'routine' but now I think I see he misunderstood. Eric, if you could rewrite it in a 'folksy' way speaking to an end user, put it in word, and I'll happily post it on the site.

looks good, we were acquired by Eide Bailly a few months back, that's why it redirects

Note I attempted this this weekend and it didn't work if accounts had balances.in current year This is what I did instead 0) *** Backup GL Data*** 1) Rename GL_Detailposting.m4t to GL_Detailposting.hold 2) Reinitialize new one 3) Post a single JE entry so that there is some detail was in GL_Detailposting.m4t (Otherwise next step will error) [Note this entry goes away in the end] 4) Recalculate the GL Balances 5) Manually change the Account Group to be the correct Category and Type 6) Open Main account and change the Account Group to something else and change it back and click accept (Note this fixed this accounts too) 7) Rename the temporary GL_Deteailposting.m4t 8) Rename the original GL_Detailposting.m4t back to .m4t 9) Recalculate the Account balances 10) The accounts should now have the new category and type Note not for the timid but better then DFDMing a couple hundred accounts

@JimWoodhead - you renumbered the accounts to a different section first? I've done this 2 or 3 times, every time with balances in the current year - so I'm wondering if I missed a step in my write up or what happened. But it sounds like your process might be simpler.

I tried renumbering just the main account and that didn't work for me. The old account didn't renumber. So I went to plan b
