Here's one copy of the letter Sage sends via email to customers who have lapsed software maintenance. I've always believed the customer is entitled to patches or fixes up to the level that they are using. Maybe what Sage is implying is that they won't be able to login themselves to download the patches?

Over the past several years as the relationship with Sage has become strained, I have become less inclined to enforce their policies.

Sell a product you know is defective and then demand endless payments to fix it - in most industries that would be called extortion.

We've followed a policy of applying updates/upgrades that were released up to the date of the expiration.

Omg...you can't, you can't, you can't - what a terrible way to end an email that's intent is to inspire a customer to renew maintenance. Next they'll be running around like 2-year olds shouting ""Liar, liar pants on fire"".

Great point @MoiraGoggin - a better ending would definitely have been: What WILL renewing your maintenance offer you? - Ensures you always meet compatibility with new servers, and operating systems (Windows 8, Remote Desktops, Virtual Servers) - Integrates with our latest mobile payment solutions allowing you to email customers and collect money faster! - Enables you to purchase new user licenses, new modules and migrate to newer technologies ( a valid software maintenance subscription for all new purchases)
