He appeared confident that he would be able to install and configure this. I wished him well. Advised that it's generally not a self-install. Happy Holidays. We'll see whether I hear back after New Years.

So was your answer politically correct like 'Sir, you should be sure to read the upgrade guide, FAQ, ensure your server and all workstations are compliant with the requirements defined by the publisher, have tested all interfaces, enhancements, third-party solutions, conducted training with existing users, defined how new features will be deployed, backed up the MAS 90 directory, made an image of the server........' ...or, did you say whats really on your mind: 'Oh Hell, go for it! What can it hurt? And by the way, let me give you the name and number of a great guy who does support over the holiday in case you run into any trouble. Unfortunately, I will be out of pocket until February on my annual walk about in the back country of Australia. Good luck!'

@PhilMcIntosh - ""I'm sorry, my flight to Australia leaves in a few hours. Be sure to give my buddy X a call. Good luck"" (Feel free to insert the name of a you 'favorite' competitor as X)

Next Two Calls: a. Hi Wayne I was making a backup company for payroll and now I can't see any data in my live company. b. Hi Wayne we found an article you wrote about Time and Billing and we have Hightower Time & Billing which is now SWK and well they're not open so I thought maybe you'd answer a question for us.

I just know I'll get a call on January 2nd or 3rd from a prospect that will say ""Ok, we're ready to buy now."" ""Actually the expiration date was 12/28, but I gave you one more opportunity to order on 12/31, but you decided to take a 4-day weekend and ignore me. And, no, any discounts are no longer available."" I already wrote him off on Friday, so I wouldn't be disappointed today. Why ruin NYE?

I had the same situation with a customer on Friday. ""We made a backup of our payroll but mistakenly copied over our live data."" I was actually thinking you should add that to the biggest mistakes customers make with year end @WayneSchulz.

...and cue the 4:15 ""Hi Wayne it's xxx again. The owner's brother. I give up. I can't get 4.3 to run - is it too late for you to login and fix it"" ..

At least he waved the white flag, sooner rather than later. And it's even not 5 yet!

And to close the New Year's Eve out it's the email from a customer whose IT department froze me out from upgrading their system for two months while refusing to give me access remotely. Which actually wasn't that bad because I learn every time one of these characters pulls a stunt. - Start time is contingent on receipt of payment (not promise of payment) - Go live day is contingent upon IT granting us access to system as measured in days/weeks from our ok that the access is good. If the IT guy delays - the schedule automatically pushes out with potential added cost change requests if it pushes into our busy season.
