Hazy lazy day - client has IM item product type de

Hazy lazy day - client has IM item product type defined as a KIT. She wants to change it to finished good. BOM is defined as a kit. We change the BOM to standard, save and go back to item. Product type is still grayed out. All quantity categories are zero. What am I missing to change it via IM maintenance. Should I just do it via DFDM? Thoughts? TIA

you have to delete the BOM for the item to allow changing the Item Maintenance setting from KIT to Raw Material (or Finished Good). I have on occasion, 1. changed the BOM to Inactive, then 2. copied it to a ""new"" BOM with an Inactive Type. 3. changed the item master, from KIT to the new setting (RM or FG) 4. then created the BOM fresh as a Standard Type, copying from the ""new"" BOM I created in step # 2 above. Seems like a ""lot of work""; because it is a lot of work.

Never mind. Sage KB article says to delete the BOM(s), then change product type to FG, then reenter the BOM. Wow! Also amazed that you still can't use miscellaneous codes for a kit BOM. Amazing that they have never remedied these little gotchas.

So for the reseller brain surgeons, why not change the BOM to standard, then DFDM the product type?

speaking of /Misc Items on BOM's. In a recent conversation with Sage, their response was it was intentionally done this way. If you are going to ""add"" the WO Module after having your BOM's established, you would not want those /Labor Misc Charge Items in WO or you run the risk of double posting labor. You would not want both Real Labor you post in WO AND ""costed /Labor Charge"" you added on the BOM. By letting the BOM only have /Charges and the WO only having /Items, you get the best of both worlds. And it allows you to do a BOM Production Entry without forgetting to manually add manufacturing costs since you would have your /Charge on the BOM. (true story)

In a quiet system, I do it that way all the time. I don't see any downside or problem doing so.

Stupid is as Stupid Does.. Gee, I suppose you could write a little sliver of code to prevent this in WO....... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_Komi7wnAw

Sliver of code"" is so much more elegant than my comment to programmers of ""you can do that in 1 or 2 lines of code, right?

Where there is a will, there is a way. Problem with Sage is that no one has a will any longer...

    Nor the way?

@JeffSchwenk I'm interested in what you find. I have a customer who has a lot of their Items setup as IM Kits with BOM Kits. Now they want to stock the finished item instead of selling the components. I played around with it a bit today and was able to change the BOM type from KIT to STD and leave the IM item as kit. It let me do production entry and a sales order seemingly all normal. My instinct is to do as you suggest - change the BOMs from KIT to STD then DFDM or VI the CI_ITEM to change type from KIT to FINISHED GOOD. I'm hoping to catch any hidden ""gotchas"".

@WayneSchulz - The official Sage way is attached. Delete the BOM, change the field, reenter the BOM. That is what the client did since there were only two to do. File in the category of there should be a better way but Sage isn't going there.
