Has it always been that you can't enter something in the Alias field in SO or PO Entry? Would swear I have done so before.

If you enter the alias in the item code field, it auto copies to the alias field. It could also auto populate it with general alias, if you enter the normal Sage item code (which may not be the best scenario). I don't recall ever being able to enter into this field manually.

I just ran into that last week! I too was disappointed.

I once wrote a PO entry script to allow the user to control the alias value... the customer uses them to drive different options / descriptions. Do a lookup, then pop-up a list of choices, with button clicks to set the desired value.
